Kennedy Park Resort Napier

I booked a whole cabin for myself. There was a double bed and 4 bunk beds connected to a bathroom and kitchen/living room. There was a picnic table outside on the verandah and a car space just outside. The kitchen is well provided for with oven and gas hobs. There's toaster, kettle, fridge etc. ... I only boiled some eggs! It would be comfortable for a family in good weather and there were BBQs on site. Slept well but limited space for clothes if 6 people on site. There is a restaurant on site ... ”The Storkey” ... but I did not use. Easy to find shops a mile down the road.

My wife and I spent two nights on a powered pitch at this campsite during a motorhome tour of New Zealand. The campsite is well situated directly overlooking the beach within driving distance of Napier City Centre. Generally our stay was comfortable but there were a few issues that irritated us during our stay, hence the lower score. Showers - Inexplicably the campsite charges residents 1$NZ for a five minute shower. The shower cubicles contain a box into which you insert the 1$ coin and hot water is forthcoming. My first issue was why charge additionally for showers where guests have to ensure that they have a 1$ coin (coins of a lower denomination are not accepted) when this additional cost could be simply added into the nightly rate. From our experience from other campsites around the country over a six week period this was the first time we had been charged for showers. My initial thought that it was to stop residents wasting water needlessly but although the 1$ coin gives you access to hot water if you do not insert the coin in the slot you can still run the water, tepid and cold it may be but this clearly doesn’t stop people wasting water if they are unconcerned about having a tepid or cold shower. To add to the frustration my first attempt failed miserably as my 1$ coin got stuck in the slot and would not be shifted. Hence I had to shift everything, clothes, toiletries etc to another cubicle to repeat the process. So the less than five minute shower cost me 2$ not 1! My second issue was the Cafe which never seemed to be open during our stay. We had read before arriving that the Cafe was open for breakfast and lunch daily and for dinner on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. We arrived on a Sunday and duly walked to the Cafe in the evening to find it closed. The somewhat disinterested Receptionist advised that it was not open for dinner that evening. Again I found this a little bizarre. I can understand that residents might use the Cafe for breakfast or a mid-morning coffee and perhaps also occasionally for lunch but after breakfast I would have thought that business would be slow as residents already there would probably be out of the park at that time of the day and any new arrivals were only able to check in from 2.00pm. Please note the campsite is some way out of Napier City Centre, not within walking distance and we were informed the local bus service was unreliable.
