Shima Onsen Yoshimoto
4.7/552 Reviews
I stayed at Tokiwasure-no-Yado Yoshimoto for two nights in December 2023. Everything was impeccable - the service, the room, the onsen and the staff were all lovely. Much thought and care has gone into the elaborate, exquisitely plated kaiseki breakfasts and dinners and each room has all the comforts and amenities a luxury onsen getaway could ask for. Even better, this ryokan did not discriminate against me as a solo traveller and allowed me to stay in the main building in a spacious and luxurious room with its own private onsen. There is a separate area in each room with a private bath for changing, cosmetics and drying one’s hair which I found highly convenient and made good use of during my stay. The private onsen attached to my room was comfortable, overlooking the lush green forest and hillside where the ryokan is situated. I will definitely be stopping by Shima Onsen again and Tokiwasure no Yado Yoshimoto will be my accommodation of choice.

I stayed with my family twice in January 2022, after the New Year and in late January. Both rooms were on the 7th floor. The first time was a corner room, and if you looked down from the veranda, you could see the flow of the Shima River. The second time was not a corner room, but a family of three could relax in a Japanese-style room of 10 and a half tatami mats. Both arrived earlier than the check-in time, but the check-in was smooth, and the explanation from the front desk staff was polite, and it was easy to understand with memos such as meal time and bath time. Thanks to that, I was able to enjoy the open-air bath early. The open-air bath had shampoo conditioner, body soap, and soap. A razor, aftershave lotion, hair tonic, hair liquid, comb, cotton swabs, and tissues are provided at the open-air bath washbasin. It seems that there was also a cleansing for women. There was a place where you can drink the hot springs on the first floor. A paper cup is provided. Two elevators. One was the observation elevator. There were heaters and rubbing alcohol throughout the ryokan. Wifi was available everywhere in the room and inside the hotel, so I didn't have any problems during my stay. It was fast enough. By the way, the price of juice etc. in the vending machine in the inn was the same as the price outside. I was impressed that there was also a vending machine for cup noodles. Tea and sweets were placed in the room, and there was hot water in the electric kettle and cold water in the refrigerator. The tea was Japanese tea and hojicha, and there were many teapot packs. For dinner, we had a meal in a large hall, but each table was far away, and we were given a bag to put away the mask during the meal. You can enjoy your meal slowly. I was satisfied with the quantity and taste. The catering staff was moving very quickly and it felt good. After dinner, there was a picture-story show by the proprietress. It was about 15 minutes, but seeing the proprietress's heartfelt picture-story show made me feel very nostalgic. There was also an explanation of Shima Onsen. When my son saw the picture-story show for the first time, he became a fan of the proprietress. The second time, after the picture-story show, my son was very happy to have a two-shot with the proprietress. When you return to your room after dinner, the futons are spread out and you can sleep right away. My bed is always my home, so the futon in the Japanese-style room is somewhat fresh. The open-air bath was open to men and women at different times, but it was spacious and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Even after 5:00 in the morning, I went to the open-air bath in the dark and woke up perfectly. Breakfast was also very good. Check-out is at 11:00, so buy souvenirs at the shop before that. If you pay by credit card, it will be smoother if you ask them to charge the room before checking out. When I left the entrance, the staff took out my shoes, everyone greeted me in a loud voice, and I was able to leave comfortably. On the way back, when I took a family photo in front of the entrance, the staff came immediately and took it for me. Shima Onsen wasn't a big tourist spot, but it was a very good place to go to the hot springs with your family.

First of all, when I arrived at the ryokan, they carried my luggage and guided me to my room, which made me feel comfortable. Immediately after arriving, I entered the large public bath (men and women change around 22:30) the next morning, but there were few people and I was able to soak comfortably. The temperature was just right for my shoulders. In the open-air bath, you could hear the sound of the river in front of the inn. For dinner, the focus was on rare ingredients such as river fish and duck, which were not heavy. There was no habit and it was just the right amount for a small eater like me. The rice cooked in the pot was delicious. Everyone at the inn was nice. The points pointed out in other word of mouth have been improved, and there was no particular dissatisfaction. I would like to come again.
Sekizenkan

We have visited Sekizenkan several times and have always been attracted by the history, the lovely baths, the food and the lovely staff who are always so kind and considerate. My wife decided to surprise me for my birthday by booking the best room in the hotel - ”mori”. A beautiful room with it's own outside onsen bath looking out to the 300 year old pine trees that act like a curtain to provide privacy. We were lucky enough to have some snow to complete the picture perfect scene. Everything was perfect until we tried to use the shower and I managed to scald myself a little because the water seemed to suddenly get really hot without warning. We wanted to use the overhead shower but found that it had not been fitted properly and was just loose from the wall (please see photos). What a disappointment to what should have been a fantastic birthday surprise. Even more disappointing when you consider the cost which is double during the New Year holidays. My wife did complain to the manager and also reminded him a similar complaint had been made by another customer only a few months earlier but nothing had been done to fix the problem. We received a simple apology but little else. I just hope no young children use this room as there is a potential for someone to get injured using a defective shower that could cause someone to get scalded with hot water. I really hope the management take some maintenance action and show more consideration to customers who pay 5 star rates for a room in Sekizenkan. All our previous experiences have been excellent but this time deeply disappointed.

It was my first visit. It's a charm to feel history. It's a pity that the roof was under repair. . . It was Sunday, but there were quite a few customers when checking in. You can see that it is a popular inn. The response of the attendant who guided me first at the entrance was a little bit, but it was never office or cold. The room was a mezzone type and was wide 々 and the cleaning was neat. Very personal taste, but I was happy that the hot water pot installed in the room was Russell Hobbs. One of the multiple hot springs was not put in, but the public bath and the open-air bath were gentle and wonderful. The bathtub separated from the three hot water temperatures was also good. However, it is difficult to suddenly get up and down the temperature of the shower in the washroom. Even though I had hot water at the right temperature, it suddenly became cold water. . . The meal was very delicious for dinner and breakfast. The amount was just good and the response of the attendant was pleasant. During training? The foreign staff was polite and nice. My husband also said that the hot spring and the meal were great and wanted to visit again. Thank you for your care.
Shima Grand Hotel

In accordance with Tokyo business trip, I decided to go to Shiman Onsen, which can be reached by high-speed bus 1 books from Tokyo, and examined the color 々 including word of mouth and chose this hotel. ◎ It was a two-night meal, a solo trip, Friday stay, but it was very cheap. Other famous inn was not able to make a reservation, and it was very expensive even if it was possible. ◎ hot springs of ”Tamura” were available. ◎ dinner was also half Viking in the basic seat, and tenpu (4 kinds) were fried and free to eat. Also, there were very many quantitative and I couldn't eat. ◎ Breakfast was a Viking form, but because of the time shift, it was almost dense and I was able to eat without stress. ▲ The heating equipment in the room was old and bad and very cold. Also, the sound was quite loud and noisy. If this was not, it was a full score.
