After reading good reviews, we booked. As it was the final Sunday of the July 4 weekend, we paid a premium price, $ 320 for a room. $ 320 on peak season, I understand. We chose here because of the kitchen and location as weeks on the road eating at restaurants saw us missing good nutrition for the kids. 1. Kitchen stove had 4 burners, only 1 worked. 2. Ok, it's a beach hotel and pretty old. The room floor was filthy. Our feet were black after a few minutes of walking on it. 4. Toilet was wobbly, not fully repaired correctly. 3. Our 2 kids needed a shower/bath. We had no water, the entire hotel had no water. No information from the staff on check in. Our kids had a 40 minute bath - only drops at a time from the faucet into a kitchen pot. No choice, at that point it was too late in the evening to get my little ones to another place but for $ 320 a night.... Management said sorry, Home Depot was closed and I'd have to wait, ***. I'm sure there's a 24 hour plumber on OBX, easy to google. Water came back around 11 pm, bigger trickle and ice cold. In the morning, I complained about it all. The office staff said sorry and offered a 20% refund back by via *******. None arrived after 3 weeks. I emailed the hotel, asked for the refund. the "Manager" reply was again it would be done via *******. ******* was informed of the stay, refund and emails from the hotel. Blue Heron refused even after in person assurance and email. We stayed in 36 hotels on our US holiday, some good but all with honest management. We don't complain much but in this case, Blue Heron might be a good place but our experience was less than the value of the room for sure. I was patient. I emailed politely. ******* sympathized and apologized even offering me a $ 40 credit because the management was dishonest. Now time to post, not with bad intent but to inform.

The staff and location was awesome!!!! We were given the honeymoon sweet at a discount and the staff was excellent and more than accommodating. We had a gorgeous private beach, private access, and a small kitchenette. We truly loved our stay and would stay again. Krishna was the nicest and was always checking on us and seeing if we were good!

We choose The Blue Heron for a 3 night stay because of the Good rating on ***********. Our reservation was for 3 nights and we paid in advance as we have had good history with Booking. We checked in by talking to a man on a video monitor which was really bizarre. The room had rusty, ancient appliances in the kitchenette, no toilet lid, no spring gadget to keep toilet paper on holder, towels were yellow and gray and frayed. The caulking in the bathroom looks like a child did it. The description said vintage which meant everything was last renovated in the 60’s. The bedding and rug was old and ragged. The room was dark and dingy even with all the lights on. We asked for our money to be refunded by the motel or Booking. Both parties are saying that only the other one can give a refunded. Tried to get my credit card company to fix it. No luck. Stayed at the Comfort Inn and had a very nice stay.

Very Friendly clean with nice view. Small motel. Update , with Decor bathroom was dated but clean and painted nicely. We enjoyed it as we made our trip down early. And our condo was not available for our extra added day. I would definitely stay her again . brought back memories of my childhood

Only one I could afford for the season. I am so grateful. Manager very kind. Very clean. Beds very comfortable. Bring your own coffee. Room coffee cheap. Bring your own soap. They offer liquid on the wall. Bring your own shampoo. Right on the beach. Every room facing ocean with balcony. No breakfast, but fridge and microwave. It has indoor and outdoor pools. Very clean. Overall, I loved the fact I was able to stay on the ocean!! Definitely would come back! For it being an old building, it is still nice. Those complaining about the building should go pay double some place else.

Excellent value. Half the price of surrounding hotels but had indoor pool & hot tub!! Older but clean. And had both an ocean view and a sound view.!! We could see Manteo at night all lit up!! Very nice manager who tried hard to please us. Booked thru *********** as 1 queen bed but got reserved into 2 full bed efficientcy with kitchenette. Needed the larger bed so mgr immediately swapped into a king! I can complain about anything for the price! Just be aware there’s no elevator so you have to walk the stairs if you’re not on 1st floor…there are 3 floors.

The last time we stayed at this motel was 24 years ago, but we have never forgotten it. The local owner was wonderful and welcoming. It has since changed hands, but the physical structure remains mostly the same. We found the new owners’ kind, and the electronic kiosk for check in is effective. The attendant on the other end was able to answer practical questions, like “Where do we find the ice machine?” Sure, there is a spot of rust at every nail on every stair tread as you ascend the back stairs. The small tilt out windows above the tub used to provide wonderful ventilation but are now rusted in place. I do wish they would get rid of the couple of random and broken-down furniture items on the beach side and broken ac units between the buildings. Despite these minor details, these 1960s era buildings seem quite sound, and it still can offer a great experience. The new owners are making noticeable investments in the rooms themselves. Our two double room provided very comfortable new mattresses, a large flatscreen TV, a nice new chest of drawers, a full-sized drip coffee maker, mini-refrigerator, and a microwave. The very private balconies are wide. The Kitty Hawk high sitting chairs with a connecting middle table were most appreciated for seeing over the balcony. The opposite shared balcony is good for a brief sunset view over the Pamlico Sound. There is a regular small outdoor pool, a lap pool and a very nice indoor pool suite with a hot tub and bathrooms. With true beach facing location, this low frill lodging is more connected to the ocean than most. There is no breakfast of any kind offered here although a small supply of coffee is offered in the room. Nearby Sam and Omie’s, The Dunes, or Grits Grill all offer excellent hot breakfast. This is a quiet and non-pretentious place offers clean rooms with full-on ocean facing private balconies. It is not for picky or fastidious types who cannot handle minor flaws or an occasional smoker who may light up on their private balcony. Fishermen seemed to gravitate to the cheaper first floor dune view rooms in the north building. The second and third floor rooms in both buildings offer excellent water views above large natural dunes. The third is slightly better than the second. It is not really a big deal if you must have that view and wind up with a second-floor room. This motel offers great value, and we would most definitely stay here again. Though on a smaller scale, The Blue Heron has more amenities than some larger cooperate counterparts. I would like to be on that balcony or that bench along the boardwalk to the ocean right now. We prefer the more convenient and less congested South Nags Head location.
