Nice hotel, clean, spacious rooms and wonderfully groomed grounds. Very pleasant and peaceful to sit on the deck with a beverage. Hotel does have bicycles for use/rent. In order to get to the beach you need to cross the street. Convenience stores near by.

A unique and outstanding, experience for three nights in Nags Head! I had a larger room that provided both a sunrise and an ocean view. The spacious room had character and was tastefully appointed with a 4 poster bed, wet bar, refrigerator, Keurig machine, microwave, and comfortable furniture including a writing desk. The custom breakfast was absolutely outstanding that included a superb collection of pastries, fruit, and juices each morning. The breakfast staff, Beth and Sue, did an excellent job of serving us and making certain everything was in order. Afternoon wine social was relaxing with tasty extras. The dining room was undeniably enjoyable and also well appointed. The pool, garden, and grounds were well maintained and encompassed a myriad of special plantings and touches. A very short and easy three minute walk to the sandy beach. I will be back!

I usually only write reviews if the place was amazing or horrible. The First Colony was neither, but I felt the negitives were worth a review... Pros: beautiful property, beach chairs you can use, nice pool, historicly cute, nice social hour with snacks and wine, above average breakfast and nice location. Cons: rude staff, moldly tub/shower, room was not cleaned very well (tons of dust, dead bugs in windows), check-in only from 4-5 and they close up at 5, 1 tiny, tiny shampoo and bar of soap and never replenished, they issue you a 30 minute window for breakfast and seem very flustered about it, have a library for use but rush you out and lock it up at 5 on the dot (my daughter was remotely working in there and could hear the staff talking negitively about guests all day long), porch swings on rusty chains that seem like they haven't been changed in 15 years..could break at any moment. I would not ever stay there again. It was quite expensive in season.

First time back in 10 years. The only changes we noticed were for the better. Food was excellent and the staff professional. Will definitely come again. Beach access is a short walk away. Glad we went in the off season, traffic and the crowds increase dramatically in the summer

Inn is very unique with whimsical gardens on a historic property. Lovely wrap around porch with various chairs to sit and relax. Breakfast in the morning is a continental breakfast and a hot made to order plate. You are assigned to the breakfast room by time slots and the room itself is very quaint and cozy. The same room is used for the afternoon social. To get to the beach you have to cross a fairly busy street and climb stairs up and over a small sand hill. They provide beach chairs which you can wear like a backpack. Since the property is very old, the rooms reflect this as well. Our room was very dark and musty smelling which we attributed to the very old carpet on the floor. Beach, sand, water and carpet do not go together. The bathroom reflected the age as well. The air conditioning worked superbly, thankfully.

Great stay at this historic hotel! The staff was friendly and helpful. While there is no elevator, there are no more than 2 flights of stairs so it wasn’t bad to take our luggage to the top rooms. They are not allowed to add an elevator due to local governmental regulations for historic buildings. These rooms allowed us to see the ocean from a distance. The hotel was equipped with a nice pool and a trail to the ocean. The gourmet breakfast was a delight!

"Writing this is not easy for me. I've been a guest at the First Colony Inn on and off for over a decade. The accommodations have always been pleasant, as has the included breakfast. Regrettably, with the new management team, things appear to have taken a downward turn. I am aware it has been a challenging summer and most places in the Outer Banks are short-staffed. However, the attitude and overall discontent among the staff marred the visit. Adding to the disappointment, the general manager (Beth) actually charged me for two nights instead of one. Despite my staying only one night, her desk clerk was aware of this. With the staff's general apathy, the manager's behavior, and the decline in standards, our family won't be able to return unless there is a significant improvement in the operations and cleanliness of the Inn. This situation has deeply saddened us as we've created many cherished memories there in the past. We sincerely hope that the First Colony Inn can rectify its course."

First let's talk about the Pro's. The Inn is in a great location. Although it is surrounded by Nags Head, you feel like you are in your own secluded resort with the beautiful landscaping surrounding the entire compound. It is an easy walk across the street to the beach with a dedicated pathway just for visitors. They provide really nice beach chairs if you need one. The room prices are fair and doable. Included in the price of your stay is an amazing breakfast every morning. All kinds of sweets, fruits, cereal, muffins and a hot plate selection from the chef. And when I say hot plate, I mean lemon cream stuffed French toast with fresh blueberries and blueberry syrup, etc. Also included is a Wine and cheese happy hour every afternoon. The house wine is delicious and they provide a huge charcuterie board loaded with fruits, cheeses, crackers, olives, pickles, cookies and so much more. The pool was clean and there were lounge chairs, pool toys and umbrellas. I was told there were towels available, but I brought my own. Because of a limited amount of rooms you will find it to be quiet and peaceful. Decks all the way around with ample seating to catch the sea breeze. The rooms were very cute and a bit rustic. I have only two Con's. My heated towel bar did not work and they advertised robes in the rooms which I did not have. Seriously, who cares? A lovely, lovey place to stay.

Great location, on the main road but set back so not noisy. Private path to beautiful beach and huge garden. Room was very comfortable, with plenty of towels and a super bed. Breakfast was delicious but the nicest touch was the afternoon cheese and wine, where we met some lovely people. Staff were very welcoming and helpful. A thoroughly enjoyable stay.
