"## Fumoto Ryokan, Kurokawa Onsen - A Northern Kyushu Trip From Yufuin to Kurokawa Onsen, there are three daily bus services: 9:00 AM, 1:50 PM, and 2:50 PM. A quick note on bus reservations: While online booking is available, it requires credit card payment beforehand, which isn't ideal. We don't recommend it unless it's peak season and you need to secure a seat days in advance. Our suggested method is to ask the front desk at your accommodation (like Yufuin Sansuikan, where we stayed) to call and book for you upon check-in. This typically secures a seat for the next day, and it's usually successful unless it's peak season. Phone reservations don't require pre-payment; you can simply pay on the bus. The contact number is 0570-09-3533 (9:00 AM - 5:00 PM). The bus ride takes a little over 1.5 hours and costs 2200 JPY. (Refer to Photo 1 for the timetable.) The bus also makes a brief stop at a rest area just before reaching Kurokawa Onsen. The ryokan provides a pick-up service from the bus stop. If you're unable to contact them beforehand, don't worry – it's an easy 10-minute walk to the ryokan from the bus stop using Google Maps. It's not far, and you can enjoy the charming onsen town scenery on your way. The ryokan's main entrance is located directly opposite a cream puff shop, which coincidentally shares the same name, 'Fumoto.' Be aware that the entrance can be easily missed, as many tourists often gather in front of the cream puff shop, potentially blocking the view of the ryokan's discreet, Japanese-only sign (see Photo 4). There's no need to use the ryokan's public baths; the women's outdoor section, in particular, tends to be quite cold. Instead, the ryokan boasts a large number of private baths, ranging from small to large. As the ryokan has a limited number of rooms and is generally not overcrowded, you'll almost always find an available private onsen. A highlight is the unique 'Tachi-yu' (standing bath), where you can literally stand in water up to 1.6 meters deep. Kurokawa Onsen is a very compact town, so booking a plan that includes both breakfast and dinner is highly recommended; otherwise, finding dining options can be challenging. The meals provided by the ryokan were excellent and definitely worth trying. Although we were a group of three, there wasn't a specific room option for that number of guests, so we regrettably ended up paying for an 'extra person's fee'. Our rooms were quite spacious. We stayed in rooms named 'Taka' (Hawk) and 'Kiri' (Mist), which offered views of the mountains and a pleasant stream flowing right outside the window. The ryokan staff were all young and extremely friendly, with some even being Chinese speakers. Overall, if you're looking to experience the charm of a traditional onsen town, Fumoto Ryokan is an excellent choice."

"Excellent! This hotel truly offers an authentic Japanese experience. It features its own onsen, complete with both indoor and outdoor baths. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful; despite any language barriers, they made every effort to clearly explain everything. They even offered a complimentary ride to the station for our departure. We'll definitely be back!"

"Serve in buffet style and lots of choice. Room size is good and new renovated. There has private onsen for couple and families without additonal charge. Close to the shopping street. But need to check with the restaurants, most of them close on Tue or Wed"

"The hotel is very close to the bus station and can be reached on foot. This trip was to see the lights, which were really beautiful. It was worth the trip. I also visited the Kurokawa Onsen town. The weather was slightly cool and I arrived a little late, so I didn't buy a hand card to open other hot springs."

"The hotel is conveniently located, the Japanese-style room is a comfortable size! We did not take food, but 2 noodles noodles were waiting in the room :) the reception staff are very nice, we left our suitcases before check-in and after check-out without any problems. The hotel has its own hot spring, a foot bath outside and they also give a voucher for visiting the hot springs in the ”main” hotel across the street, they are unforgettable there!"

"The hotel has English service. Because the hot spring town is in a valley, there are many ups and downs. If you have a large suitcase, you must ask the hotel to pick you up at the station. The hotel has fixed delivery times at 10 am and 11 am. If you are leaving in the afternoon, you can ask the hotel to deliver to the storage point at the station in the morning, and then go back to the town for a stroll. Storage for large items is 500 yuan/time (100 yuan*5), and small items are 100 yuan/time. The hotel is built on the mountain and is very special. There are 5 hot springs in the hotel, and cave hot springs are the feature. The room is close to the river, and the sound of the stream is very loud at night, making it difficult to fall asleep. One night and two meals are OK."

The front desk staff were exceptionally friendly and always ready to assist with any needs or requests. The hotel's dining options were also fantastic and more than satisfying. "What a surprise, a special car pick-up at the bus station🚏, one night and two meals are great! The girl from Zhejiang is beautiful, enthusiastic, and thoughtful. She introduced us to delicious cakes and Dorayaki in the surrounding area. The entrance of the hotel is the starting point for hiking. If you have time, you can go for a walk. There will definitely be unexpected gains! The hot springs are also great. Kurokawa Hot Spring Town is worth visiting again! Unforgettable🥰"

"A very satisfying stay! The design of the cabin is stunning. The two-story independent cabin allows children to climb up and down as much as they like. The owner of the B&B is very enthusiastic. Even if he doesn't understand the language, he tries his best to use translation software to introduce Kurokawa Onsen's attractions and B&B facilities. It really makes people feel like returning to their hometown. Kurokawa is very quiet at night, and you can really enjoy the tranquility and leisure of the deep mountain hot springs. The cabin is fully equipped and can be used for simple cooking. I cooked Japanese sukiyaki pot with the children in the cabin, which was very satisfying! The outdoor hot spring in the B&B is another amazing place. Because it was summer, we didn’t make a reservation for the hot spring. The owner of the B&B enthusiastically invited us to enjoy it (unexpectedly). Unexpectedly, it turned out to be an independent open-air hot spring. I highly recommend making a reservation. It’s too Feel comfortable! The next day, the children were very reluctant to say goodbye to the owner of the B&B and the owner's dog. Along the way, they still missed the comfortable bed (actually just a tatami sleeping mat) in the B&B. I will definitely visit again next time I have the opportunity! "From entering the parking lot everything is taken care of, the rooms are enormous, the size of and amenities of a decently sized appartment along with a large kitchen and finally a private onsen fit for two people right next to the beautiful Kurokawa onsen river, aswell as a small waterfall creating an absolutely dreamy experience. The Ryokan is a about a five minutes walk outside the city center which is absolutely no problem as you have everything you need there. The gentleman in the reception speaks decent English so even with no japanese knowledge you should be fine They only seem to have four rooms, we got lucky and booked two days ahead, but most likely won't be that lucky. Absolutely would go again, great experience"
