Reception was good, but when I got to the room there was no heating on. The receptionist apologised, changed some setting on the system and the heating came on. Unfortunately, I was on a quik turn around so it was still cold when I left, but toasty warm on my return, except for the bathroom, which never heated up. The room and its facilities were well presented and clean. Could do with some decaf coffee sachets in the refreshment offer Next morning I took some of my clothing out to the car, but on return to get the rest found myself locked out because of the timing of the electronic key. This was just after 9.30 am Sturday morning, when check out is up to 11.00. Found a member of staff who apologised and issued another key. I got the remaining stuff from the room and put in the car, then went to seek breakfast, which was all laid out when I started checking out, but was cleared away by about 9.45. Apparently if you have not booked a breakfast the produce is removed so that the area is cleared for when non reidents are allowed into the space at 10.00am. I had searched all the in room information the night before to find out the timings for breakfast, but there was no such information on any of the documentation there. Yes,it is on the website, but it should be readily available in the room. I discussed this with a member of staff who agreed with my point of view, but made sure I could get what I needed, so all was made good. My point is the staff, all of whom I found to be polite and helpful, should not have to appologise for the basic faillures of the sytems they have to operate within. Senior management need to adress these issues. They detract unnecesarily from the overall impression left on the customer, which no amount of staff aplogising can erase. These are niggles that should be adressed, but I woud emphasise, the room was clean and the staff exemplary, the stay overall was reasonable value for money and despite the above I would/will stay there again ( by which time i hope the niggles have been resolved)

My room was clean and rather nice. The bed was comfortable and the shower pressure was good. It was very quiet on the first night. Second night, other guests were partying in another room, so it was a bit less quiet. But it's honestly a decent hotel and pretty good value. However, I had the worst steak of my life. It wasn't badly cooked. It just tasted awful. I didn't eat half my plate. And the young waiter didn't know what blue meant nor - and that's more shocking - what a real ale was. That's because they don't serve any, I guess.

Amazing staff. Rosie was very attentive and went the extra mile to make sure my experience was a good one. Adam and Jacob checked back to see if all was ok. Meg, well what can I say. She is so comical. I was on my own but didn’t feel awkward at all. Will be back

I contacted The Highfield by email around the beginning of the year asking if they would be able to accommodate early check-in as I was flying in from the States for a friend's wedding nearby. They asked about what time I was thinking (about an hour and a half earlier), and confirmed I'd be good to go. Due to their prices being quite reasonable (for one person, especially), I proceeded to book one night. As the date of my stay drew near, my plans changed and I found myself needing an additional night. My reservation originally stated no amendments could be made. I reached out via email again and they immediately tacked on another night for me! The rate for that night was slightly cheaper as well. The day of, my flight was delayed so I ended up arriving a half hour later than intended. I was told my room was ready and handed a key with a note on the key card envelope, specifically noting my early check-in request (I very much appreciated that little detail for some reason - just my brain being weird). I was on the top floor. There is no lift. So if you have a lot of luggage, keep that in mind. I had a massive suitcase with me as I'm travelling for two weeks, but the stairs are on the shallow side since its an older building so it wasn't too bad. I booked a single. The room was perfect for one person. Bathroom wasn't cramped and nicely updated. All basic necessities were provided, and for me, the bed was comfortable enough. The only thing of note: There's plenty of seating, but they don't particularly have a lounge space with sofas or chairs. Not a big deal, but as an avid reader, sometimes a space to read with a beverage surrounded by the ambiance of a hotel lobby/restaurant is a vibe. Not too much to do in the area, but I booked for convenience of location based on my immediate need. Overall, highly recommend. Thank you for a cozy stay!

We went for a retirement lunch and we had a lovely meal with great service from staff. We pre ordered as there was a large group (over 15 people). All meals came correct and they were piping hot. Reasonable priced and good deals we also had lovely desserts

Large car-park which is a plus. Plenty of seating inside too. The Gents toilet takes a little time to locate. Menu very good indeed, something for everyone, varied and a large range. Reasonable prices and below average prices compared to rest of the country. The helpings are good too. I chose the Steak and Ale pie and it was moist and tasty, with plenty of gravy. Staff affable. The only let down was no real ale. It was removed 2 years ago as it doesn't sell. I find that odd. Whilst part of the town maybe deprived and known for poverty and social issues, real ale is not as expensive to drink as Lager, Guinness or Gin. Fizzy ale with air bubbles is just full of gas and no good to anybody. I would return here for the food range but would have to drink a soft drink.

Very disappointed as we usually come often. Food came out lukewarm, left most of our meals and child’s cheeseburger had a horrible after taste and bun just crumbled daughter refused to eat it and only ate the peas and chips. We had no check back at our table and eventually when the plates were cleared no check either. Manager nowhere to be seen to speak to and staff were just too busy talking to each other. Only member of staff who was okay seemed like he was a supervisor who took our order at the bar.
