Matfen Hall Hotel, Golf & Spa

Just spent 2 nights at Matfen for my birthday. What a wonderful experience. The place is stunning and the staff can't do enough for you. I can't remember everyone's names but they were all fantastic and it felt like Mark went the extra lenght to make our stay wonderful both evenings at dinner. The food is just fantastic. The mix of flavours and tenderness of the meats were perfect. We had the tasting menu on the first night, accompanied by matching wines. It was the best experience ever and can't wait to try again. It really is worth the money, there wasn't a single course that wasn't divine. I've always steered clear of oysters, but after the tasting menu I'm hooked! We ate in the cloisters on the second night and the food was just as devine. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff to explain and help you choose. I had eggs benedict one morning and Avocado with poached eggs on sourdough the other morning. Eggs benedict has always been my favourite but both breakfasts were out of this world. My husband had the Matfen full breakfast each morning and said both were perfect. We arrived early due to storms and therefore our room was not ready, but we went for lunch and once the room was ready they took our luggage through so we didn't have to go out and get wet! When we left, the car was outside the entrance waiting for us and they had loaded it up with our luggage. There is a thermostat in the room, so you can be comfortable, great idea as some people prefer cooler rooms and some people feel the cold more. Chocolates and a bottle were in the room for us. I was meant to have flowers, but they never arrived, only niggle but nothing major! Bath robes and slippers are provided and the toiletries are a good size, no minature that runs out after one shower! As we had a suite and it was December, there was even a Christmas tree in the room! Lovely touch, but not sure all rooms would have them, I assume it depends on the size of the room. There is a turndown service too, so when you come back at the end of the night you have bottles of water as well next to your bed. I drink a lot of water and they were happy to provide when it ran low. Would I recommend this place, definitely! Would I stay again, can't wait to!

Amazing. We had a one night stay to celebrate a birthday and it did not disappoint. So much so I wish I’d have booked two nights. The entrance to the hotel is stunning! Pair that with the Christmas decorations it looked amazing. Our luggage was taken to our room while we had a welcome drink in the bar area which was lovely. The room itself was very nice - the detail, I cannot! Even down the to towels, bathrobes, slippers, all superb not to mention the toiletries! There is no expense spared and it shows - a nice complimentary bottle of champagne chilling in the fridge also. We had food over at The Keepers. Great portions, good quality food with a lovely atmosphere. Someone even came from the restaurant to collect us as it was rainy. Breakfast - exceptional. Plenty of choice, lovely vibe and the staff all super friendly. I will most definitely be returning and would 100% recommend. My only regret - I didn’t book an extra night in order to use the spa facilities and have more time to explore the grounds and local area. Stately home luxury The rest of the hotel never quite lives up to the jaw-drooping grand entrance hall, but it's still all very impressive. The main dining room gives you an idea of what eating at Blandings Castle would have been like, the bed was very comfy, and the gym/pool are top notch
