We traveled to Dhamana Beach guesthouse on Mahibadhoo near the end of 2021. I was a little nervous to book a place that was so new without being able to read other guests’ reviews, but since the staff was so responsive and helpful via WhatsApp (patiently answering all my many questions) we decided to go for it. Our family of six (including four young kids) stayed for five nights. Dhamana Beach exceeded our expectations, and we would have liked to have stayed longer! The guesthouse: Dhamana Beach has six guestrooms total. We stayed upstairs and really enjoyed the view of the beach from our window and balcony. One of the island’s prettiest areas of beach is just steps from Dhamana’s door. Our rooms were clean and comfortable. The guesthouse decor is charming, with lots of plants growing in recycled containers in the entryway. We opted for the half board option, which included lunch and dinner. We had the continental breakfast, but a Maldivian breakfast option was also available. The dinners were great! We were served a different dinner nightly, and each night included a nice variety of international, Asian, and Maldivian options, along with some type of salad and usually fruits. The staff asked often about our preferences and even included some kid-friendly favorites like French fries since we had our children with us. Snorkeling: While we brought our own snorkeling masks, we borrowed flippers for free and could have borrowed other equipment if we had needed it. The best areas for snorkeling are near the bikini beach, but we also enjoyed snorkeling with our kids near the guesthouse, where we saw plenty of fish, a couple of moray eels, and a spotted snake eel. The staff also took us on a complimentary tour of the house reef and helped us spot things we might have missed on our own, like a hiding octopus! About the island of Mahibadhoo: A 1.5 hour speedboat ride from Male, this inhabited island is quaint, quiet, and (at the time of this review) not very busy with tourists. We enjoyed quiet beaches every day of our stay. Locals were friendly to us, and we enjoyed the little glimpses we had of Maldivian life… families out snorkeling together, fishermen heading out to sea, children flying kites on the beach, and the local soccer teams practicing on the field that’s right beside the sea. If you stand in Mahibadhoo’s central street, you can see the ocean on your left and right! Our kids also enjoyed walking by the harbors and seeing the fishing boats. Beaches: There is a “bikini beach” on the opposite side of the island - a short walk from Dhamana. But we opted to just wear culturally appropriate swimwear so we could make use of the local beaches as well. Some of the beach areas are a little rocky, and you do see small pieces of glass here and there. If we were to come again, we would want to bring some kind of water shoes to make the rockier areas more comfortable. The best beach for swimming (in our opinion) was right across from Dhamana. The
