Title: Bad experience – Not recommended
Review:
My stay at this hotel, which calls itself Asia Grand House but is actually called Zhou Hao Hotel, was a huge disappointment. Although the hotel looks like a new place (as of 2024), it has been around for over 10 years. So don't be fooled by the name.
Communication was terrible. No one spoke English, which made even simple things a challenge.
Regarding breakfast: we were supposed to get four breakfasts per night. The first day I had to ask for it myself, and we only got one. This consisted of a simple bun and a drink – a huge disappointment and far removed from a normal breakfast buffet with bread, eggs, fruit and juice. The days after, bread and milk were arranged, but even that was amateurish: the bread was simply heated up in a microwave, because there was no toaster. Of course, that is inedible. We also had to set the table ourselves.
The scooter rental was also chaotic. My passport was supposed to be kept at the hotel by the receptionist, as agreed. However, this turned out not to be true. When I wanted to get my passport back, I was given an unbelievable excuse that it was in an external office. This office did not exist at all, because the scooter owner was happily standing outside with my passport in his hand. It was a drama to get it back, and without a passport you can't do anything in a country like Laos.
Extending our stay was also a frustrating experience. I paid extra to stay in our current room. However, when we came back from riding the scooter later, we were suddenly asked to pay an extra $25. In the end, we decided to move to the booked room and demanded the extra amount back. This whole process was also unnecessarily complicated and frustrating.
The laundry service was also unprofessional. For 30,000 kip I got my laundry back wet in a basket and had to hang it up and fold it myself. This is not what you expect from a paid service.
On top of that, the facilities were in poor condition. The shower barely worked: almost no water came out, and hot water was rare. In addition, the sink leaked constantly, which made for a dirty and uncomfortable bathroom experience.
The hotel is completely geared towards Chinese guests. If you don't speak Chinese or Lao, you won't feel welcome here at all. All in all, this stay negatively affected our entire impression of Laos.
Conclusion:
I definitely do not recommend this hotel. Poor communication, unprofessional service, poorly maintained facilities and a lack of respect for guests make this a stay to avoid.
