A favorite. We were under its spell. A castle… gardens… a restaurant… rooms… everything was beautiful. Very aesthetic, this mixture of the old with contemporary art. Very original. A passionate and dedicated staff. To see, to experience absolutely.

Picture this: you're on your honeymoon, where your wonderful, patient spouse indulges your crazy desire to stay in a castle. You save money and book an expensive suite at Château du Rivau for three nights because it's a lifelong dream, once in a lifetime. You arrive late in the evening, drop off luggage in your amazing-looking room, and have dinner in the beautiful garden at the castle. After a satisfying meal, you return to the comfort of your suite, only to discover the room is not something out of a fairytale fantasy... it's a bloody nightmare. Picture this: a graveyard of dead flies surrounds you. Countless bodies of dead flies absolutely litter your entire suite. Dead flies adorn the floors, gathering in higher densities near the windows, their bodies sprinkled on the floor all around the bed. Intrepid individuals have crawled into nooks and crannies to die, including a handful under your pillows. It is far too late. You are locked in. There is no staff at night. You are exhausted and want to scream and run away, but you don't want to ruin the trip. Your amazing, infinitely patient spouse sweeps away the bodies of insects off the bed, including a live spider, and even checks under the sheets for strays. None there, mercifully. You try to sleep but can't, because there is a single, surviving fly buzzing up in the ceiling, trying desperately to escape. Go ahead and spend hours pondering that fly's pitiful, doomed existence, seeing its fate in its expired brethren scattered all over the floor. Go ahead and try not to think of crushing their bodies underfoot as you must inevitably get up and walk around the room in the long-awaited morning. Go ahead and pray that this last fly--let's call it Gerard, shall we?--will not choose to lay itself to rest somewhere over your head and fall lifelessly on to your face. Go ahead and spend six sleepless hours repressing your own despair, and perhaps use the (long, oh my god far too long) time awake to compose a wretched review such as this one. This was our reality: I had dragged my poor spouse into an insect horror show on our honeymoon. When morning arrived, I discovered the body of Gerard on the vanity upstairs; it hadn't been there the night before so I assume it was Gerard. We headed to the front desk downstairs--by the way, there are no elevators, so tough luck if you have lots of heavy luggage or are disabled. The receptionist, Mateo, was professional and understanding, but also new--no idea how this happened and escaped housekeeping's notice. He apologized and promised they would clean everything and change the sheets, so perhaps there was a chance to salvage this? We left for the day, hoping we'd get the experience we were here for. To their credit, I believe housekeeping did clean and change the sheets, but when my wonderful, infinitely patient spouse went up to our room to check after we got back that afternoon, the situation had only gotten worse. The insect graveyard was out of control. And

A beautiful castle with matching furnished rooms. Everything is in order down to the last detail. At breakfast we lacked nothing. In the evening we had a delicious dinner with matching wines in the conservatory of Le Jardin Secret.

The chateau was comfortable and had modern amenities (especially the bathtub). The gardens were very beautiful and perfect for children. The meals were delicious and fresh, with vegetables and fruits that were grown at the chateau. It was like a fairy tale.

Château du Rivau: Present for a family wedding this weekend of April 22, 2023 - Superb location but average services and exorbitant prices! 1st big negative point: the parking lot and the path leading to the castle are not tarmacked... it is raw earth, made of ruts, mud, stones and puddles. Barely crossed the 200 m from the parking lot to the castle, we arrive with shoes stained with mud and full of dust. 2nd negative point: The press, a half-open room where the Cocktail is located. The floor is made of bricks arranged on the edge, 3 cm from each other... in short, the floor is not smooth... women almost break their heels or twist an ankle. The owners could easily pour a concrete screed and put parquet or beautiful tiles on it! 3rd negative point: The tiled floor of the large room is frankly not ideal for dancing in the evening. 4th negative point: we had booked all the rooms in the castle: it is downright overpriced: €250 per room per night. Even if the decor and equipment of the rooms is perfect, it is not worth more than €175 per room per night. 5th negative point: in the park, there are peacocks! Very nice as an animal representing the Middle Ages. But they screamed almost all night long... every 3 to 5 minutes. Conclusion: impossible to sleep (before 3am) as long as there are guests outside disturbing the peacocks! 6th negative point: the cherry on the cake! The bathrooms with bathtub or shower are arranged in an alcove next to the room (separate toilets).... but there are no doors or curtains to separate!!! In short, you are forced to shower or bathe NAKED in front of your partner, family member or friend who shares the room with you! That's crazy. What the hell are we thinking? However, a simple and beautiful dividing curtain would do the trick! Finally, separate single beds are practical, except that they are only 80 cm wide. When you are tall or fat, you risk breaking your face and falling to the ground. In conclusion: I do not recommend the Château du Rivau until the owners have made the necessary investments!

Napoleon III chairs, in gilded wood with velvet seats would be the most beautiful effect, given the place... but once again, the owners of the castle seem not to want to make any investment! We stayed in the Henri II room for three nights and slept wonderfully. In the morning there was a delicious breakfast with freshly prepared crepes, coffee or tea of your choice, a large selection of jams and honey from the chateau's bees! Mr. Thomas was very helpful in planning tours in the area - from visiting other chateaux to making table reservations (be sure to take advantage of this). When they are open, the two restaurants in the chateau are highly recommended. The gardens and the chateau itself are great to explore. Even in October, many roses were still blooming. The dahlias and grasses are magnificent! Particularly beautiful in October: the potager in the courtyard with lovingly designed flowerbeds! We were completely delighted.

Very well received by Carla who took care of us during our one-night stay. She accompanied us with our suitcases on arrival, introduced us to the place and the history with enthusiasm and welcomed us warmly at breakfast the next day. The rooms are located in the old stables of the castle, completely restored with taste and quality materials. Very appreciable attentions, such as the local hand soap with the scent of roses from the place as well as an eco-responsible approach make this place a magical place to spend the night. We sleep well and we feel good there! The breakfast includes local artisanal products, even better! Be careful, I don't think there is an elevator and if possible at breakfast, I would add lactose-free options (or vegetable milks). Pleasant stay, I recommend this hotel to anyone passing through the area. I will come back as soon as possible!
