Suiran, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Kyoto

Arashiyama/Sagano/Takao
My wife’s birthday trip at the Suiran was a dream come true. With successive Covid cancellations, it took us four years of planning, but it was worth the wait. With their traditional Japanese structures and landscaping, the Suiran was our oasis of calm during Kyoto’s busiest season (cherry blossoms). We enjoyed a wonderful dinner and the best breakfasts of our lives in their dining room, and blissful riverside happy hours in their cafe. Our comfortable room had all the amenities, and a soothing minimalist aesthetic. The Suiran staff is spectacular: thoughtful, gracious, attentive. Through our years of planning and days of enjoyment, we were guided by Suiran’s chief concierge, Hiromi Maruyama. Her kindness, patience, and expertise added greatly to the success of our time in Kyoto. Her suggestions and insights, and good spirits were a beacon shining our way. We are indebted to her for her efforts on our behalf.

The location of the hotel is very special. From the bustling Arashiyama business district, take a boat along the small river upstream. The scenery is beautiful all the way. It takes ten minutes to arrive at the hotel on the bank of the small river in the green valley. It is very quiet, like a small The paradise of idyllic beauty, very rare and precious. The hotel rooms are Japanese style, with a quaint aesthetic, and the facilities are clean and tidy. The most commendable thing is that the beauty inside the room and the scenery outside the window complement each other, making people intoxicated... Here you will really sigh how perfect and touching the combination of natural beauty and artificial beauty can be. May is the season for maple trees to bloom. The green maple leaves outside the window, with little red maple flowers, are already fascinating. If the maple trees are full of red in autumn, the ultimate beauty will be breathtaking. The service of the hotel is very good. The service staff are very kind and polite, making you feel at home. In particular, the breakfast is delivered to the room and put on a table. It is very rich and unique, and you can enjoy the food while looking at the beautiful scenery outside the window. Although this hotel is expensive, it is worth staying several times in different seasons for those who want to explore the natural beauty of Kyoto and the beauty of Japanese tradition, for those who look forward to the ultimate aesthetic feeling of residence, and for those who like a quiet paradise.

The hotel is very new and clean, the room is large, but it is a little distance from the city center, there is no lift equipment, you need to take the suitcase up and down, there is a parking lot nearby, it is convenient to drive by yourself.

Momijiya Bekkan (not to be confused with Momijiya Annex) was a lovely traditional Ryokan experience. As westerners this was very different to the modern hotel but made a but easier with wifi, power points and many amenities. We chose this place as the private room was tattoo friendly (but we couldn't use the public baths) and the outdoor bath was really nice and peaceful. Note!!: the advertisement shows a Maiko and a tea ceremony after dinner! This is not the case, it only occurs on Fri-Sun during summer (July-sept). I did not know this and was the main reason why I booked this ryokan, so just be aware that outside of these times, the included experience is just dinner and breakfast only. The food was adventurous but good to try! The beds were futons and what you would expect sleeping on the floor, but the room was quiet, silent even, and it was peaceful in the mountains. There's shrines to explore nearby, and check in was 1500, not 1800 like other websites listed. All in all, good experience, bit expensive when the Maiko/tea ceremony isn't included but a nice stay in the mountains.

Everything is good, the only thing I think could be better is about the check in and out time, it can only check in at 4pm and you have to check out at 10am, you don't really have 24hrs for the stay, they do have public hotspring, however we don't really have enough time to enjoy as the dinner is provided by other restaurant which is not inside the hotel. The meal provided is kinda not my expectation. In general the room is great, service is good, but not nearby convenient store and you cannot get any food if you are hungry at night.

Arashiyama/Sagano/Takao
+ Location, the neighborhood is beautiful to the side of the temples and bamboo forest and near the center, 12min in fast train and 17min in normal to the central station. · The hotel is a little old and needs renovation since it is seen that it was only a face wash and not a reform.
