It was a great experience to sleep in a temple accommodation!
Before checking in, we were able to leave our luggage and walk straight to the Kongobu-ji Okuno-in Temple. The beautiful path through the cedar forest with many shrines and monuments starts right next to the temple.
The rooms are simple in Japanese style with tatami mats and futon beds. We had a great view of the garden from our room. The bathrooms were shared with other guests. Bathing and showering in the onsen were only possible from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
After checking in, we took part in a tour of the temple at 4 p.m., which was very interesting.
Dinner was served promptly at 5:30 p.m., vegan of course, as the monks live. Then we went to bed early because the day started with a prayer at 6:30 a.m. After that, we had breakfast, also vegan of course.
The experience was rounded off by the fire ceremony, which started at 12 p.m. and lasted about 2 hours.
