Shuzenji Onsen Katsuragawa
9.3 (315 reviews)

Shuzenji Onsen Katsuragawa ★★★★

📍 Shuzenji 860, Izu City

"Aside from being expensive, there's absolutely nothing else to complain about. The hotel staff were proactive and enthusiastic. They saw us taking photos by the entrance and offered to help, mentioning they could also speak Chinese as they had studied in China. There's a free welcome drink, free late-night snacks, and welcome ice cream. Plus, there's a supermarket right on the ground floor of the hotel. Both breakfast and dinner were incredibly abundant. And there are free massage chairs available for use right by the entrance to the open-air hot spring bath."

"Second visit. My Japanese has deteriorated, but the staff speaks fluent English. I thought it was great. I soaked in every bath. It was very relaxing. I had reserved breakfast, which was also excellent. Because the breakfast was delicious, I also bought some local specialties. Thumbs up!"

Shuzenji Onsen Katsuragawa ★★★★
"The location is absolutely fantastic! Built right along the Katsura River, you can open your window to the soothing sound of the river and lush greenery. It's only a 3-minute walk to Shuzenji Temple, and a morning stroll along the riverbank is incredibly relaxing. The Japanese experience feels so authentic. Dinner was a kaiseki meal, with sea bream chazuke and grilled wagyu that were both fresh and exquisite. The room was a traditional Japanese-style room, and the tatami mats were clean and soft."

"The hotel opened in 1872 and boasts a superb location and ambiance. I stayed in a Flower Suite, right next to the Bamboo Path and Katsura Bridge, with unparalleled views from the window. The hotel's dining and service were both excellent. The room facilities have also been renovated and are in very good condition. No wonder it has been a 25-year-old "Top 100 Hotels" list."

Hotel Takitei ★★★★
"The location is confusing; when you enter the address, it shows a room on the 4th floor near the back entrance. The female staff member at the 1st-floor front desk was incredibly rude during check-in. She didn't speak any English, only talked about herself, and seemed tired, ignoring people and looking like she had no intention of working. Above all, the hotel is extremely outdated. They boasted grandiose descriptions of the 2nd to 4th floors, calling them banquet halls and amenities, but they are incredibly cramped, and there is absolutely nothing to enjoy. It makes me wonder if it is worth paying money to come to a place like this. You should go to a different hotel instead. Since Shuzenji Onsen is small anyway, you won't have any issues if you go to another hotel. I also didn't like the tatami room; they gave me a low-floor room on the 5th floor with a trashy roof view. When I first entered the room, the door was closed, but there were fallen leaves on the floor. It was unpleasant, and I considered complaining, but I held back because I was afraid I would just spit in their face. It was the worst hotel I've ever stayed at."

Yukairo Kikuya ★★★★
"Absolutely gem of a ryokan and our favourite place to stay. Admittedly we did have the western beds (very cozy). Having a room along the river and across the suspension bridge was magical and exciting. Everything was perfect. The staff were so welcoming and made us feel incredibly at home from the moment we arrived. The highlight for us was our private riverside onsen right in our room—soaking there with the sound of the river rushing by was pure magic. The beautiful "Kikuya Pond" (KKJ pond) and the overall historic, serene layout of the property added so much charm to the experience. The Kaiseki dining was utterly delicious, beautifully presented, and a true culinary highlight of our trip. As Westerners, we felt incredibly valued, respected, and well-taken care of by the staff. That being said, hospitality goes both ways! We highly recommend that fellow Western travellers take the time to learn basic Japanese phrases and standard ryokan etiquette before visiting. It’s a two-way street, and showing that respect makes an already world-class experience even more meaningful. Our only regret is that we didn't stay longer. We cannot recommend Yukairo Kikuya highly enough and cannot wait to return.

Izu Marriott Hotel Shuzenji ★★★★★
"The room was spacious. There's a public hot spring, but they said swimsuits were required, which I didn't bring, so I unfortunately couldn't use it. The decor materials and color scheme didn't feel as good as back home, especially in the bathroom."

"This will likely be our favourite stay of our entire trip! It felt like the most warm homely and welcoming step back into a Japan that is rapidly disappearing. The food is sublime, effectively a 14 course tasting menu of authentic local food, sat on tatami mats with the wood fires next to you, dressed in a lovely Yukata provided by the ryokan! I cannot recommend this stay enough, the mountains around are gorgeous. We got off the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Osaka at Mishima station and rented a car for the day to see Mt Fuji and Izu peninsula which all worked out great!"
