Visited for lunch to celebrate yet another of many, many birthdays! Upon arrival we were greatly impressed by the hotel's immediate surroundings. They were obviously cared for and there was a member of staff busily and cheerily tending to the lawns, sweeping up leaves....... . First impressions are so important. He was still at work three hours later when we returned from a walk. Once inside we were greeted by two friendly and super attentive members of staff. Our table was set in the lounge/bar close to a roaring fire but not too close to be too hot. The dining room was being taken up by a group who were staying for several days. The situation had been explained to us upon booking and presented no problems for us. The bar, lounge and shared areas were immaculate and very, very well presented in terms of decoration and quality. We've never experienced better. Little things such as light switches and handles had obviously been checked and polished. Spot on, these things matter to folk looking for something above the norm! Traditional, tasteful and sparklingly clean. The lunch menu was varied and different when compared to the usual fayre on offer elsewhere. Service was attentive, friendly and proper without being stuffy. Spot on once more! The two meals we enjoyed were probably not what we would have normally chosen but they sounded so appetising that we took the risk. They were splendid, well presented, well cooked and really good quality. Two empty plates said it all. All in all, a really enjoyable lunch in an hotel which we would describe as outstanding. Well done all at Stone House. We'll be back for a longer stay.
