My wife and I frequently cross on the Belfast/Birkenhead ferry and we tried a number of accommodation options near to Birkenhead. The day ferries dock at 1830 and leave at 1030 so, for a relaxed experience, it's nice to have somewhere to stay the night of arrival and the night before departure. Everywhere we tried was disappointing until we discovered the J&B, which now feels like a second home. We have stayed half a dozen times. We arrive early evening and the pub is invariably a hive of good-hearted bustle. Andy and his team give us a warm welcome and we know most of them by name. The rooms are comfortable and the food is fantastic. There is always a selection of well-kept local real ales. We are treated to a truly fabulous breakfast before our return ferry to Belfast. Attention to detail is superb - real crusty toast, not 'plastic pan', and scrummy home-made granola. On this occasion we stayed two nights on arrival in GB and the first was spoiled by a boiler malfunction meaning no heat or hot water in our room. We were impressed to see a maintenance team hard at work within a few hours and our second night was warm and cosy. On checking out the cost of the first night's accommodation had been totally subtracted from our bill, without the need for a grumble or the usual argy-bargy! These GB visits 'bookended' by the J&B are usually for a specific social event, but we sometimes look forward more to the J&B experience than the event itself! We're already looking forward to our next visit.
