Hampton Inn Gillette

The rooms are average here, the internet doesn't work properly. It's otherwise a pretty average Hampton. The problem is the management. We ended up paying $6.56 more than the reservation stated, and I don't know why. The biggest issue was at check-in. There was no one there to check us in, and it wasn't very late - just before 9pm. We waited for a while, maybe 5 or 10 minutes, and then I called the hotel number. Melissa answered, I just told her that we were there to check in, and she hung up without comment. She did come out to check us in, but she told me that I should have gone behind the desk, and knocked on the door. I questioned why I would do that, or feel like it was acceptable, and she told me that she was just being funny. I didn't find it funny, and said that they could have a bell, or anything, and I didn't understand why she was being rude. She told me that I was being rude, and that she wouldn't give me a room if I continued being rude. I didn't understand how it got there, and just kept quiet until receiving the key. Once I had the key, I told her that she was the only one that was rude, and she told me that she was going to have me removed. Using the threat of not having a place to sleep that night should not be taken lightly, and it was clear this employee would have done it to anyone for almost any reason. I understand that workers in these positions are under stress and treated poorly, but sometimes the customer is still treated poorly for no reason. The most concerning thing, though, is that I contacted Hilton about it, and received unintelligible, clearly outsourced responses, and ended up getting nowhere with it. Hilton was one of the very best hotel chains 10 years ago, but has dropped to one of the worst. On this trip, I had issues with another Hilton property, and they chose to just not respond (they charged a made-up fee that wasn't disclosed). It's time to start looking at Marriott and other chains for quality accommodations.

Some cosmetic challenges aside, we felt mostly comfortable for our two night stay. An interstitial lack of security on external doors. Was nice to be able to open windows in the room. Adjacent restaurant was nice for convenience, and had some great staff. Heat lamps are a bit too intense for breakfast buffet, but warm food is better than no food.
Holiday Inn Express & Suites Gillette

Clean and comfortable. Those are the two words I would use to describe the Holiday Inn Express in Gillette. While the rooms are older and need a renovation, my room was extremely clean. Probably the cleanest Holiday Inn Express that I've stayed at in a while. Absent a renovation, some minor updating would help. The TV in my room was from 2011 -- as in 12 years ago. There was no smart TV capability. A new TV would help. Also, all of the wall art looked from the mid-2000s. I don't mind the color scheme but the art on the walls throughout the hotel just feels dated. It wasn't even that great to begin with. Those things aside ... The hotel itself is a slightly older Holiday Inn Express. For example, there's no market or pantry. The breakfast area is small and be cramped on a busy morning. Staff were polite. The breakfast offering was one of the better Holiday Inn Express breakfasts I've seen in a long time. I appreciated that they had eggs whites and turkey sausage -- two items that many other Holiday Inn Express properties seem to have eliminated from their breakfast offering since the pandemic. while. My only complaints besides the old TV and ugly wall art? 1) Despite having IHG Diamond status, I did not receive a suite upgrade. Every category of suites were available during my stay. But the front desk never offered an upgrade. Upgrades are a defined benefit. 2) No bar of soap was provided in the bathroom. 3) The bedding wasn't the typical Holiday Inn Express bedding. The duvet cover was that textured sheet you see at Marriott's Courtyard and Fairfield hotels. 4) No newspapers in the lobby. 5) In-room lighting was horrible. Instead of one or two central overhead lights, there were at least five lamps each with their own switch. All things consider, there aren't many good hotels in Gillette. If I was in the area again and the rates were fair, I would return. I would be more likely to return if the hotel was updated and the management recognized IHG status by providing an upgrade.

You get what you pay for. The room was fine. I had a room with 2 queen beds. The hotel itself looks like a motel (single floor) but it’s not. The hotel and the room smells but that’s cause of the carpet. The washroom is tight. The tub floor can be replaced/cleaned/reglazed but bring flip flops you can wear in the shower. The lighting in the room is dim. The room itself is fine. It’s surrounded by many other more expensive hotels but this will do if you’re not picky. Bring a pillow case and a flat sheet or blanket and you’ll be fine. No breakfast so you get 20 off at Perkins nearby but their food is blah.
