We were staying in Room 14 which was really noisy at night, with constant creaking above and anytime anyone was moving around the hotel. Unfortunately we did not have a comfortable nights sleep as a result. The bathroom was also needing a bit of an update as water ran in pipes and dripped for ages after using it. Overall we were disappointed with the stay, although we did enjoy the continental breakfast and staff serving breakfast were lovely.

My mum and I had a one night stay here. We had a double room and it was lovely! Very warm, comfortable bed and everything we needed for our stay. Breakfast was lovely, we were warned it was continental when checking in, but absolutely no problem for us. We dined in the restaurant in the evening and were met with HUGE portions of lovely home cooked food! The morning breakfast staff member had not turned up and left the housekeeping team picking up the pieces, The two staff members were amazing, very professional and ever so apologetic! It ran very smoothly and was perfect for our onward journey! Would highly recommend this lovely hotel and we will be back! Thanks for everything!

I cannot say enough about this hotel. My Wife and I recently returned from Scotland. If you are looking for a down-to-earth experience for old Scotland, this is your place. The Staff is amazing and the owner, John is a true Scottish gentleman. The building was built in 1685 so don't expect a four or five star hotel. The rooms are clean, drinking in the bar with many of the locals in the town was super fun. 40 mins drive from Edinburgh is worth the time staying at this hotel. Restaurant is very good. They go out of their way to see that you are comfortable. Do yourself a favor. Stay here if visiting around Edinburgh. You will not be dissappointed.

This is a lovely small Hotel in a small beautiful village of Gifford. From the minute we entered the Hotel the staff were very friendly and helpful. We stayed in a twin room and the beds were very comfortable. Small but everything we needed with lots of extras in the bathroom. We had dinner which was great and the price good also. Breakfast was continental with plenty of choice. I would definitely recommend this hotel if visiting this area. Staff and local people extremely friendly.

Stayed here, I was going to the Scottish Open with my mate. After reading a recent negative reveiw, I felt the need to write my own very positive reveiw. After a long drive up from Wigan in constant rain, it was great when we got to this little gem of a hotel. When we entered the hotel, it was like stepping back in time. No Reception, so we went into the bar and was greeted to a very pleasant Scotsman Colin. We checked in with no hassle, and he helped out with a few questions we had about the area. The room was just like the rest of the hotel, a pleasant time warp, clean, warm, and tidy. We had a drive around the area and village, which is worth a little walk. Then we went for dinner. Once again, there are no frills, but the food was very good. The service from the young lady was very pleasant. The hotel is connected to a small pub, where we went for a beer which was busy due to the football. Colin was on the bar working hard and even had table service. Back to the room for a good nights sleep. Down early for breakfast. It has been mentioned that there was only a continental breakfast on offer. I was looking forward to a full Scottish breakfast. The continental was definitely sufficient in choice and freshness. Also, the breakfast lady was very pleasant chatty. She even went out her way to find some takeaway cup, so no complaints. Checkout was painless as we had settled everything the night before. The dated decor actually complements and still gives this old coach house character. There was no problem with parking, walking on the pavement surrounding area. I will definitely stay again. Kevin and Shaun

Lovely pub and staff. So helpful. Good real ales, good range of whiskies, good beer garden. Friendly locals, too. Bedroom small (typical of a pub) but very comfortable and well equipped. Proper continental breakfast is very substantial with cheese and cold meats. Will definitely stay here again.

Beautiful BUT..... Beautiful hotel, alas cooked breakfast we paid for turned out to be a continental breakfast because lack of staffing or ordered by new owners. Not informed beforehand and near shouted at that we were upset about it. Other guests were not informed and seemed very disappointed at breakfast. PLEASE PLEASE be very aware of the slabs outside the hotel door, as not secure and extremely wobbly. Hence I tripped, sprained my ankle and having to cut short our holiday I have sadly chipped a bone in my opposite knee. Staff not bothered when locals helped me back into the bar and no help given. Parking only available on road was NOT highlighted. Yet after much consideration they allowed us to park our Classic motorbike in alley way, after we complained but still unlocked. Some staff could do with hospitality training and lots of it.. Ok stay but we will not ever go back. Honestly save your money and find somewhere better. Near Faulty towers experience without the laughter.

Set in a beautiful village, we stayed on route to the Highlands and generally were a bit disappointed sadly. The service at dinner and in the bar didn't really seem particularly welcoming to us. After a very long journey we were looking forward to some good old Scottish hospitality. Maybe just an off day for a couple of members of staff. I must say the breakfast staff were lovely and happy though! We were told the kitchen closed at 8pm, so ordered our mains before then and assumed once you've ordered your mains, you'd have the chance to order a dessert after finishing the dish. It would have been good if they would have advised us before the chef actually left the building that we either ordered now, or went without! Maybe have an option of a cold dessert where another member of staff can cut a slice of something from the fridge if Chef had left? Rooms were fine, dated but in keeping with the building and lots of corridors and stairs to reach some! Lovely guest lounge area overlooking the Village Green with comfy sofas. Nice enough, but not great compared to other places we stayed in Scotland for similar cost.

I am currently on a 3 month adventure around Scotland! Starting at the top and working my way back home to England (slowly but surely!). I stayed at this hotel for a single night as I was visiting friends who stay in the local area. The hotel is full of character and exactly what I was looking for. During my stay sadly the restaurant was not open due to staff shortages but that seems to be an issues everywhere at the moment and was not a problem for me. When I went to check in I was greeted by Ella a lovely young lady who was very friendly and helpful. I was showed up to my room which was quite small but none the less a very comfortable space. I went down to the pub later on for a drink and was pleasantly surprised by how cosy and inviting it was. The locals were great and was greeted by Susan another great member of staff who was very friendly and pulls a great pint! Breakfast in the morning was not the best cooked breakfast I've ever had but definitely wasn't the worst. I could here what must have been the breakfast chef singing in the kitchen which wasn't exactly what I wanted to hear first thing in the morning. Checking out was easy and no fuss or waiting around at all. I had paid when I arrived so that must have saved some time. Would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking to stay in the area for a couple nights. Great price, room, location, drinks and staff!
