Within the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park off the coast of Kota Kinabalu in Borneo, Gaya Island Resort Kota Kinabalu rests along the coast of Malohom Bay, a natural sanctuary nestled in the hillside of an ancient rainforest with a stunning outline of Mount Kinabalu on the horizon. The resort's architecture respects Sabahan elements; its 120 villas and two-bedroom suite use local materials and blend harmoniously with the natural environment while villa interiors are designed with a contemporary elegance.Yet this is more than just a beautiful beachfront resort in stunning surroundings; with its PURE activities, this is a place for the curious to actively engage or peacefully absorb all Borneo has to offer. Seamlessly integrated within the mangroves is Spa Village, offering a rich tapestry of spa programs that reflect the ancient healing practices of the region while restoring balance to alleviate modern stresses. Dining is a burst of freshness and flavor; exquisite, sensory and sublime. Discoveries, authentic experiences and a sense of intimacy with the natural world all prevail across the land and seascape of this resort, with its youthful vibe and sun-dappled moments, offering travelers and families an escape that is distinctively Borneo.

The room was large and comfortable, but the drinking water provided tasted a bit strange. To get to the island, you need to take the speedboat provided by the hotel, which costs an additional fee of more than 700 RMB round trip, which is expensive, and there is no reminder on the Ctrip order.

Gaya Island Resort is a posh way to end a two-week trip of roughing it around Sabah. Rooms are located in exotic tropical setting, with wildlife nearby. Activities are fun way to explore the island, especially the night walk, when we saw snakes and lizards. Swimming is relaxing at the pool but not so great in the sea unless you are snorkeling or kayaking. Not too much plastic in the water but it still plagues even this beautiful setting. Note that once you arrive on the island, you are pretty much isolated from Kota Kinabalu unless you want to pay extra for a boat ride.

I have a very bad impression of this hotel. The only thing that is worth mentioning is their private beach, which is quite large. When checking in, I found out that there is a boat transfer service, which costs 344 MYR for two people. There were dead bugs on the bed on the first day of check-in, and ants all over the floor. We planned to go there for New Year's Eve, so we went to their restaurant on the night of the 31st. Since it was New Year's Eve, the price of the restaurant was 485 MYR per person for a buffet, which was quite expensive. But the quality was a mess, and there were ants on the tableware. Including the service charge, the total cost for two people was 1152 MYR (I asked again that the normal dinner price was 140 MYR). I went to see the dinner the next day, and the quality was even worse. The hotel had a power outage at around 12.20 pm on the 1st, with no air conditioning and no internet, which lasted for more than an hour. This was a very bad thing in Kota Kinabalu with hot weather. This was not the end. The water was cut off again on the next morning until more than 12 am, when we were about to check out to catch the 1pm boat. Unable to wash. When we arrived at the hotel, we took the 1pm boat, and our luggage was forgotten on the island. We waited for an extra hour, and they sent another boat to deliver the luggage. The staff was very dedicated, and when the boat came, they quickly brought our luggage over, sweating all over. There were no convenience stores on the island, so overall, it was a bad vacation, and it is not recommended to stay at the hotel here.
