Abbey Hotel Donegal

Nothing fancy, but it is clean and in a great location.

Staff were very welcoming and helpful. We ate in the bar for 2 nts, restaurant one night and the quality of meals and service was excellent. However, there are a few housekeeping issues: a chair in the bedroom had a ripped seat, the cup and mug were not replaced for the 3 days we stayed, toilet was not cleaned, The beds were not made properly, only duvet pulled over, bottom sheet and pillows not tidied. The carpets in the corridors were not hoovered, some bits of tissue, foil etc were there for the whole of our stay. So disappointing.

Lovely hotel situated in the centre of Donegal Town, we spent one night here and wish we’d stayed longer. Our hotel room was ready for us before the approximate check in time, our room was clean, spacious and comfortable, and we were close to plenty of pubs, shops and attractions. Would definitely stay here again.

3.75/4 Staff is really great, helpful, quick. Had a travel bed set up for our toddler at the blink of an eye. Location is great easy to walk about town. Beds are rather uncomfortable and really need an upgrade. Several floors are just a bit dated although looked like the bathrooms had been upgraded. I think they are in the process of remodeling some as different groups in our party had better room. But overall beds are really quite bad

This review is for the restaurant at the back of the bar. The service was excellent HOWEVER... The vegetables on the grazing board were decaying. Inedible. Instead of serving that , tell your guest the item is not available tonight. Go buy some fresh veg. Cesar salad served with iceberg lettuce instead of romaine. Side salad dosed with English salad cream! It is no longer 1982 here in Donegal . Step it up. The seafood chowder was lovely. Other food coming out to guests like burgers actually looked good . If you don't have the fresh ingredients available on the given night , just tell guests it is unavailable.

Overall a disappointing experience. Getting checked in wasn’t easy as they were more interested in coach parties than solo travellers. Initially told 15:30 for check in, then 16:00 for check in and didn’t get checked in til 16:15. The room overlooked an internal space in the hotel and you could see into other rooms and there was no courtesy cover on the windows, such as voile or muslin. No towels were in my room and I believe this was the case in many rooms that day. This internal space overlooked ventilation ducts or something similar and the noise from these went on to the early hours of the morning and then started up again perhaps around 5:00. Out of 5 nights staying only on the final night was the noise stopped at an acceptable time. Breakfast was slightly warmer than warm but cooled down very quickly and was barely pleasant. Food in the Abbey Bar was ok but expensive for portion size. Overall while it’s a 3 star hotel there are many areas for significant improvement and the corridors etc are very tired and grubby looking. I wouldn’t rush back but believe the hotel next door to it is also part of the same corporate group. It’s a highly competitive market in west Donegal and I’m surprised the abbey can maintain its level of service based on what I experienced.

My wife and I stayed one night. In retrospect, we should have stayed here at least one more night. The hotel is located in the middle of town and had wonderful food at both restaurants and comfortable accommodations. The town is great for local artisan shopping.

We booked into the market house on Friday evening for a birthday dinner and experienced the best service and absolutely fabulous food!! We would definitely recommend to anyone in donegal town to visit 10/10 we will definitely be back soon !!
