I have been to many spots in the Caribbean in search of a quiet pretty beach, with reliably good swimming, comfy beach chairs, and a hotel that is understated, small, and affords beautiful ocean views, and it feels like we found it at the Domaine Anse Marcel — at least enough that we have booked a return visit for next year. Visitors should note that rooms very greatly in size and furnishings; that some of the units around the property are privately owned, and that work is still underway repairing the damage from Hurricane Irma, several years back — it will take some time for the larger trees to grow back. But really, that made little difference. The sandy beach, nestled in a protected cove with only one other low-rise hotel, is peaceful and beautiful. The beach chairs and umbrellas are easily accessed and you don’t have to be up at 7 in the morning to get them - they are reserved for hotel guests. The elegant seaside lunch restaurant set up above the beach with its cool breezes, serves some of the best food around - reserve early. Breakfast, at a less formal outdoor venue, was perhaps one of our only disappointments, though with a full kitchen in our suite, we were happy to eat lighter meals in the morning and often at lunch. Dinner is not available at the hotel (hopefully this will change), but our nightly adventures in our rental car to the nearby town of Grand Case served up some great meals. This is NOT a party hotel. Music is not blasting and activities are not planned. The kind, mostly French staff, simply sets things up o be comfortable, helps when needed, and then just fades into the background, while you bask in the sun and loll in the sea.
