Good points; Newly appointed rooms were very well done with more lighting options than you could point a stick at. Clean and well maintained. Quiet location but only 20 mins walk to Opera House etc. Breakfast thrown in was good. Down side; Self closing room and corridor doors made a loud bang on closing unless controlled. Late night returning guests obviously not aware or didn't care and let doors slam. Guests above appeared to have pet elephants with them and didn't care about the door slamming either. Otherwise OK.

Didn't eat breakfast, when I went, it was just a little taste. But the front desk is super welcoming, and it helps us to mention the luggage and recommend us a fun place. Also help us open the window ventilation. The most important thing is that the room is super large, the bathroom is very full, the living room has a kitchen with a dining table, close to the sea, the train is very close, and it takes 20 minutes to the city.

My family and friends have been staying at Mariners for several years. We are all well travelled and have stayed at a range of hotels around the world, from modest to ritzy. Mariners is unique- it’s not pretentious or trendy but fits in so well with the quirky and historic character and location of the surrounding area of Woolloomooloo and Kings Cross. The rooms are comfortable, and accessible for people with disabilities ( one of the original purposes of the hotel) . They have little balconies and windows that open- so rare. On my recent visit I left my hand bag containing car keys etc in a taxi. It was amazingly returned by the driver some time later , but not without many phone calls and dramas in between. Donna ( the long time co manager) was wonderfully helpful and understanding, suggesting recovery ideas and ringing key copying services. When the bag was returned to the hotel finally, and when we had already left, she made repeated calls to reach us on a bus returning to Canberra and managed to connect with us when we stopped at the airport. We then got off the bus and returned to the hotel to retrieve the bag and most importantly the car keys and car! Could this kind of personal and caring kind of service have happened at a five star glass and steel international chain hotel? No. Thanks Donna….

The industrial-style design hotel was originally located at a cargo terminal. The visual effect is very good, and the service staff are also very enthusiastic. Although there is no breakfast, the food, drinks and wine in the minibar can be enjoyed every day. There is a loft room on the fifth floor, which is the top floor, with a good view. However, it rained on the first night and the raindrops pattered on the roof. The sound was very loud, so I didn't sleep well. There is a botanical garden next to it and it is very close to walk there, but it is best to take a taxi to get to the commercial street. Because the hotel is at the port and the commercial centers are on the hillsides, so you have to go up and down the hills to take a detour. The shower in the bathroom broke and water splashed, and the water flow was a little slow, but the overall feeling of staying here was pretty good, so these minor problems can be ignored. The entire building not only has a hotel, but also some restaurants and bars, as well as apartments where residents live. Not only do I like many sculptures in the building, but there are also many good works of art on the pier outside the hotel. If you always like art and design, I recommend you come here to experience it.

I had a great stay at this hotel! The room was spacious with a large, comfortable bed, and the bathroom was equally impressive. I was on the third floor with a street view, and although there were some daytime noises, it was mostly peaceful. If you want better views, consider choosing a higher floor. The room was clean and cozy, and even though they cleaned it every 3 days, they made sure all amenities were well-stocked. The Woolworth Metro next door was incredibly convenient, and Hyde Park was just a 2-minute walk away. Plus, all the shopping malls were within a 15-minute walk. This hotel's central location made everything easily accessible. Highly recommended!

The vibe of this small hotel is obviously to ‘feel like you are at home’. I think that might well be an attraction for a longer stay but in hindsight we probably would have appreciated a traditional hotel for only two nights - for instance a fully functional bar to be served drinks, rather than an honesty bar, and then the standard five star (I’m not sure how they say they are five star!?) expected inclusions like a coffee machine in the room and complimentary bottled water were missed. These days it feels like a rip off if these bare basics are not included - for $600 a night!!! The renovation has been beautifully and artfully done, no question, but that price tag is indeed questionable! And it was a rate booked well in advance too. Maybe it’s to cover the cost of the very nice Leif products The bathroom and large bath were lovely but the sliding door wouldn’t completely close and had a weird door/curtain combo that was quite irritating and not user friendly when you are in a rush. The hotel produces a nice little publication of recommended eateries etc in the area so definitely pick that up when you check in; it led us to The Butler across the road, a gem of a place for a drink with a great view and all-ages atmosphere. Not that the person who checked us in pointed it out or gave it to us….she didn’t show any enthusiasm or do anything to make us feel like we’d made a good choice choosing Spicers indeed or Potts Point generally (which, as well as the Spicers facade itself, has really lovely pockets of beauty architecture-wise). She used the bare essential words she needed to for the check in process. It’s not in the booklet, but to get good coffee definitely go and try Primary Coffee, not far away.  Obviously boutique hotels suit certain preferences and we have stayed in many, but for the $$$s spent we left wanting this time.

Great location and great people. For the price it is very good. Points of criticism: - If you have the upper bed, you don't have a socket on the bed. You may be lucky that there is an extension cable - there are no curtains on the beds. So zero privacy

I stayed here this week for four nights. I have stayed at many hotels across Sydney, but Hotel Challis is now at the top of my list. Super quiet location, clean air conditioned rooms. Wonderful relaxing terrace to sit and chill. Close to fabulous coffee and food, and also the Andrew (Boy) Charlton swimming pool where I swam daily. The manager Nicole and her assistant Victoria are just wonderful. So very kind and excellent communication. I can’t wait to return here, thank you so much Nicole and Victoria for running such a fabulous hospitality operation, and for making my stay absolutely perfect. See you soon.

Booked for 6 nights left after 4. The heating did not work for two nights could not sleep as it was 8 degrees at night in the Sydney winter. There was a hole in the window which is hard to believe and it was cracked. When we told the person onsite they came up to the room and put tape on the glass. The fire detector was covered for some reason with plastic. Dead cockroach under the bed. Bad smell in the room. The cooking pots and pans were filthy. The management was terrible, could not make contact with them. when we did they were not helpful. I understand that it is not a high budget place but I have stayed in a lot these types of places over the years and this was the worst. And we were told by management that we had got a better room than others. We were given an oil heater after a few days. Got on to the manager one night saying the heating was not working before 12 as stated that we can contact till. He said why had we not said this earlier. Freezing in the room.

This is one of the most luxurious hostels you could stay in. It is beautifully designed, but in the dormitories they will never look like the photos unless you are the only one in there (or the other people staying in there are really tidy with their possessions!). This is the definition of the meme: expectation vs reality. The private room is incredible, it felt like a hotel room - just without an ensuite. Breakfast was fine, but disappointing. Beggars can't be choosers; but, why was there no fruit? Your options were tea and coffee, toast and cereal - that was about it. That staff were competent and helpful regarding matters of admin, but not as friendly and chatty as other hostels I have stayed in. Cleaning could be improved. Down the side of my dorm bed there were used Cotton Buds, tissues, and other detritus which was not pleasant when checking nothing had fallen down the side of my bed before checking out. The Goki experience was unique and modern, somewhat of a fan of that over keycards or keys. Overall pretty good, but don't expect the most social experience - if you are a solo traveller after making friends, there are better hostels I would recommend over this one. If you are travelling as a couple or with friends, this would be great.
