Hotel Franziskaner

There’s no elevator, when I asked to receptionist she laughed and just said I can’t help. Then I also asked is there any other man? But she just said NO. And left to smoke. If you have heavy baggage I don’t recommend. But they prepares breakfast to go if you leave early and it was ok.

Shared bathroom was better than expected. It was clean and accessible. Water was hot and high pressure! WiFi speed was good as well. Theres no fan/aircon but we opened the window and the temperature was great. Only thing was that the restaurant was right downstairs, so it could get pretty noisy at night.

Sweet hotel in the centre of Chur, very well located for station and other amenities. Traditional wooden building, spacious rooms with all the necessary provisions. Good selection of local cuisine in the restaurant (and bar), enjoyed by all and ably assisted by the very helpful Ana. Only a one-night stay prior to Bernina train, but would definitely recommend and return!

I understand that this is a rural town in Switzerland, but it does boast the World Heritage site of the Rhaetian Railway, so the hotel must be getting visitors from all over the world. So for me it should be a must for the meet and greet person to have a basic understanding of some of the more popular languages (German, French and English). However this was not the case, certainly for English, so not a good start. Thankfully I had a printed receipt which helped her find my booking. We were given 2 keys, one to the side door (which was never locked, not good for security), and one for the room. The room itself was an en suite, which is always good, but it was basic to say the least. The windows are large and open up at knee height with no railings to stop you falling out. They are of a wood frame and sort of double glazed but not in a "that's how they were originally built" way. The TV had plenty of channels, but with such a poor signal, you could only watch a few of them. The double bed was two singles pushed together, which actually moved apart during the night. No privacy curtains on the windows, so people on the other side of the street could see straight in, however there were some blackout curtains, but with them drawn to give us privacy, obviously you were unable to see out. No safe other than a drawer with a sort of lock that could be opened with any key / the edge of a knife or even a small coin. No mini bar and not even a kettle for making coffees and teas. The fixtures and fittings left a bit to be desired as well. the wardrobe had doors that wouldn't close properly, although you could force them shut, a loose fitting / half hanging off handle that was partially missing on one of the drawers and paint flaking off the radiators. The en suite is nothing to write home about either. The only thing this had going for it was the water in the shower, which was hot and quite powerful. The en suite looked quite dingy and dark only being lit by a light above a very dated cabinet. The light switch had a large gap between it and the wall, and a water feed to a removed shower head was left in the shower area which looked bad. The floor grout had mold on it and there was some enamel worn away from the shower base. Something we didn't know about before we went to Switzerland, is that the plug sockets there are different from the rest of Europe, so most travel plug converters won't fit (the pins are too wide and the plug itself may be the wrong shape). So our plug wouldn't fit the sockets. Whilst this in itself is not a problem for the hotel, so many things these days can be charged from USB sockets, so I believe at the very least hotels should have plug sockets that also incorporate USB A or C types as this would cover pretty much anything that needs charging and would not cost much to install. Does the Franziskaner have any of these? NO! So basically we couldn't charge our devices. Thankfully I had bought a couple of fully c
