The house doesn’t care at all if you are able to sleep or not! First of all: there is nobody working at the bar/restaurant during Covid. Ok. Would have been great to know that. But apparently it is totally ok if people are sitting in the garden, screaming their lungs out, way after midnight. That was our first night. In the morning at breakfast (which is supposed to be included), we found out, that you have to choose between an orange juice OR a (really) small fruit - plate! Seriously???? You have to pay extra if you want to have both! The rest of the breakfast includes toasted bread with butter (of course not real butter), jam, and eggs. But if you don’t want to have plain eggs, you have to pay extra. So don’t be greedy and ask for cheese or something like that! And the waiter was the first one during our trip, that couldn’t wear his mask properly, so his nose was out the whole time. Do we need to pay extra for that too? The second night a bus arrived at midnight and again there was screaming trough the whole building. The boy at the reception-desk just looked at me, and didn’t say a word, when I asked him for help to stop the yelling. Never again! And if you still decide to (try) to sleep here, make sure you are not on the second floor near the ice-machine. because that is, of course, also extremely loud too. Bring ear plugs! And drinks. So you can party in the garden the whole night. That would be the best place to do that. They don’t care at all.

I have recently stayed here a single night on two separate occasions before crossing over into Belize. So basically just needed a place to crash. The rooms are huge and decorated in 50s Soviet socialist style decor and bland furniture that appears to have been actually procured back in the 80s just before the Soviet Union broke up (but I digress). Additionally, I think there were only 2 outlets-one in the bathroom and one next to the bed besides the one dedicated to the TV and hidden from view-hard to charge your devices in this scenario. In short, it has seen far better times hence the relatively low nightly rates. The elevator appears to have been sent procured second hand from Japan since almost every elevator in Japan is tiny because real estate is at a premium in most large cities there unlike Chetumal-it can barely fit one person and two bags. Further, at least the first time I stayed the evening and morning front desk staffer spoke a little English-the next stay, nada. BTW, they have a hotel branded convenience store that says it is open 24/7 on the info posted in your room but it is not-appeared to close at 11 and re-open at 8 am. That's 15 hours, not 24. The weirdest thing is that except for the lobby, they turn off ALL OF THE LIGHTS on the stairs and floors to the rooms from about 11 pm to 7 am (about sunrise)! WTH? How do I climb the stairs w/o filing a lawsuit? How do I find my room? Good thing my cell phone has a flashlight. WHY? Last I checked Mexican does have electricity despite being a 3rd World Country. The saving grace is the restaurant. Greatly priced Mediterranean style menu with many healthy options to snack on including Peruvian style cold potato ”causas” and freshly make juices and they even had chicken chilaquiles for breakfast-good stuff! Doesn't fit the actual hotel ambience at all.

VviajePALZWe only stayed two nights, and unfortunately there was a rainy cold front which prevented me from using the pool. It is so lovely, that made me sad. At least there is a very large palapa sitting area with a bar and restaurant so we didn’t have to stay in our room the whole time. It is a nice size small resort, and easy to get around with paths through the lush jungle. The rooms are lovely, large thatched roof porch with a hammock and furnishings. Unfortunately again, the roof had some holes and leaked and it was all wet so I didn’t use it, including the hammock. The room was large, bedding very comfortable with fluffy pillows and very soft bedding! The sheets smelled nice and clean! There are nice handmade wooden shutters on the doors and interesting sliding screens that covered the widows so it was and dark for sleeping. Our first night we had turn down service with a treat. I. The morning a basket of coffee was left on the porch with some sweet breads. But the rules said no food or drink was allowed in the room! Lol The meals were very good. Usually All Inclusive serves buffets but we got to choose from daily specials and were served our meals. I liked that! Now for my problem- which was resolved. I just think it should not have occurred in the first place. This was a splurge for us, almost $300/night. When we were brought to our room it smelled musty. It should have been refreshed before they brought us. I should have mentioned it immediately but we had a long day driving in the rain and wanted to get in the room. I couldn’t sleep that night from the smell that increased as time went on. Since it was chilly we closed up the room. We should have used the AC to help but it was cold already! Besides the musty smell ( which could have been perpetuated from the rain, the bathroom had a terrible sewage smell! We were offered to move our room, which would have been a pain, so we allowed them to treat it. They poured bleach in the floor drain and it helped. Then we were afraid to shower and wash away the bleach. One thing they should mention at check-in, is that you can leave a tip for the employees at the end of your stay. We left some cash as we went but it is more convenient to leave a lump sum to be distributed amongst all the staff. I asked about the tipping policy but was not told that was an option. Overall, I think it is too expensive for what you get. We have stayed at luxury haciendas for less, and expected more here. If you can get a coupon or belong to the RCI it is worth a visit.
RRoad16873000060Our family of eleven was looking for a relaxing day at the beach away from the crowds of the cruise ship and Maya Luna fit the bill perfectly. Carolina was extremely professional in providing me with information about the hotel before we ever arrived. She arranged for our transportation from and back to the port. She provided us with meal and snack selections so that we would be able to make our choices before we even arrived. The drive from the port was longer than I expected and the road was not well maintained in some places. But, that is not unusual when you get away from the typical tourist areas. On our arrival, we were shown to lounge chairs under a shaded awning. We had picnic tables in the shade of the numerous trees on the property. The staff was attentive to all our requests. The drinks, snacks and lunch were plentiful and delicious. I especially liked the pineapple shrimp and the guacamole. The property is so peaceful that a pair of woodpeckers had built a nest in a tree stump right next to us. My granddaughters were really excited to see them tending to their little ones. Actually, we were all excited to see them. The sea**** in Costa Maya is a problem. Carolina had informed me about the sea**** before we ever arrived. She did not want us to be caught unaware. And though there was sea**** in front of the hotel property, we were able to take a short walk down the road to an area where there was very little. Thanks to Carolina and her wonderful staff our day at Maya Luna was peaceful, relaxing and enjoyable.
We had a two day stop over in Chetumal and luckily picked this spot. The lush enormous property, the beautiful pool, large lovely rooms with private balconies plus the most helpful, welcoming staff made this a wonderful respite. The hotel is just reopening after having to close during the pandemic so is not back to full service yet e.g. continental breakfast (included) but no restaurant or bar services yet. It is about a ten minute Taxi from downtown Chetumal and about 25 into Bacalar where we spent a lovely day. We brought take out back to the hotel where they kindly set an outdoor table for us and heated the food. Then the manager Adrian drove us to the airport. I can’t say enough about this hotel and only hope it can build itself back as it certainly deserves to.
The first impression upon arriving to this hotel is its architecture, curved lines in harmony with functionality. No doubt the Italian architect did a good job designing this hotel, the central location of the big swimming pool, the modern international art pieces and the roof details are paramount. Staff, as Jesus, was very friendly and always responded to our inquiries. Our stay of 10 days was very comfortable. The location is about 100 yards to the beach that had floating barriers for seaweed that affects beaches of Costa Maya. Nearby you will find many great restaurants, taxi stop right on hotel entrance, bus station about 200 yards away. The only downside possibly are the stairs if you are on the last floor (staff will handle your luggage), slightly slow WiFi (a problem in all Mahahual). We were lucky on our last day for they had announced electrical blackout in the city but we were not affected.
