The Hotel on Pownal

The property is a renovated motel The most recently renovated section is in conference Center . The “new”rooms are not large but are well designed for short stays . The staff are exceptionally kind & helpful . Laundry facilities are great to have access to . The breakfast is more than ample . Not gourmet - just like breakfast options at home . Tea & coffee around the clock . Fridges in room . Nice flower boxes & little patio areas to enjoy outdoors in warmer months . Complimentary use of good bicycles & helmets was very nice - good to cycle around Victoria Park . No elevators which those with mobility issues need to consider .
Holiday Inn Express & Suites Charlottetown

This was a nice hotel for a family getaway. It’s typical family spot, with decent breakfast, pool, and parking. The rooms’ layout is nicely thought-out and we had a comfortable stay. The only complaints are about noise, though we had at least one big group through in a tour bus and a kids’ team staying at the hotel at the same time as our stay. The hotel location is decent too for touring via car and it’s a short drive to Charlottetown downtown/waterfront. If you’re worried about noise then I recommend staying in a more ‘adult’ or upscale place.
Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton Charlottetown, PEI

This hotel is a big, beautiful building in a very busy area. It looks so attractive and is newer. All we ask is that a room be clean and comfortable. We felt the front desk clerk was very unfriendly and mechanical, never smiling to welcome us, just doing his job and handing us the key and information. Even though we know the hotel is newer, the carpet in our room was very worn. The bathroom, which should be the cleanest area of the room, was the worse. There was missing grout around the tub, and in places mold/ mildew was present. The tub/ shower was also very slippery, with a smooth surface on the bottom. The bathroom had an access panel for the plumbing which was rusty. The carpet in the hotel hallway was newer and still had a very strong chemical smell. The breakfast was a typical hotel fare, with mostly carbs and fake/ processed meats. Finally, though the location is convenient, the road by the hotel is very busy and you can only turn one way out of the exit to the hotel. If you want to go the other way, you have to go up and make a u turn or go very far around a block. Not convenient, not clean, not comfortable. We won't be back.
Royalty Maples Cottages and Motel

We had a change of plan prompting us to arrive in Prince Edward Island one day earlier than planned. In trying to look for available lodging options last minute, a familiar name came up: Royalty Maples. We had stayed there 15 years ago and knew that we would have decent accommodations for one night. When we arrived there this time, my jaw dropped at the complete refurbishment of the whole property. Gone was the 1970’s decor, replaced by something that fits in the 2020s. The two bedroom cottage now had 2 queen beds instead of two doubles. They were on modern metal frames with solid wood headboards. The furniture in the living room/dining area were also replaced. It now gave off a very modern, appealing interior vibe. There was also brand new contemporary wood flooring throughout the cottage. The TV was a wide screen flat panel HD TV that replaced the small 12” square glass tube TV the last time we were here. The kitchen appliances were also modernized, with a stainless steel look as well as an over the stove microwave oven. There is still a toaster and filter coffee maker in the cupboard. There is basic cookware, plates, cups, and cutlery in case you’d like to dine in the cottage. Behind the oven and sink was a tiled backsplash which shows the intricacy of their renovations. The bathroom was also completely refurbished. The new LED lights made it a lot brighter as well as new faucets and a new water saving toilet. On the outside, the front patio, patio furniture, siding, and roof have been completely replaced. There was even a compact propane barbecue in case we wanted to have a BBQ. Most impressive was the installation of mini-split style air conditioning units that will easy cool down the whole cottage on hot days. I remember the previous in wall AC units barely were powerful enough to keep the cottage cool. One welcome constant with both our stays was the helpful staff. They were able to assist and answer all our questions even though I saw them busy with other tasks on the property. Kudos to the owner of Royalty Maples for turning this place around, delivering on value. In other words, you’ll pay less for what you’re getting in comparison to the competition. My previous rating was a 3, it now merits a 5 based on the hard work they have invested to improve the place.
