Had friends coming into Bristol and we recommended the Hampton Inn, as it's usually reliably good and clean. We were having interior painting done anyway and decided to get a room ourselves so we could get together with them for dinner and a night out. Reserved a room online. When we arrived, the front desk informed us that 'locals' aren't allowed to rent rooms there. What?! Unless an insurance company referred us or we had a qualifying reason, our reservation would be cancelled and refunded. I questioned this and said we had friends staying there and planned on meeting up with them. The clerk suggested that we go next door to the Fairfield Inn as they allowed locals. She said the owner could choose to allow locals and he chose not to do so as there had been 'issues with locals' before. We were kind of shocked as this had never been an issue at any other hotel. And, when we have friends/family staying in Bristol, we usually refer them to Hampton Inn for its good reputation. We def will not be doing that again! Even the couple behind us in line seemed surprised and she told her husband that was ridiculous. Fairfield only had queen rooms available so, we left and found a great room at Courtyard by Marriott at exit 7 for a similar price but with more room, better amenities and our friends met us there for drinks and we headed to dinner. They were disappointed that we weren't staying at Hampton but couldn't cancel their reservation due to cancellation deadline. They stated that they won't stay there again. Overall, unsure of why this policy evolved but, obviously the owner should reconsider and know that all locals aren't bad nor difficult. And, we locals DO refer visitors to hotels and restaurants. We won't refer anyone to this hotel again due to a prejudice against those who live in the area.
