My husband and I were on our way to Shirahone Onsen but the roads were closed due to Typhoon Mawar, so we had to find a place to stay along the way. We arrived after 5 hours of frustrating and difficult driving, unannounced. The staff were a bit surprised to see us since this is not the kind of place that has unannounced guests arrive during a typhoon, but were very welcoming and accommodating. We stayed in room 106, which was extremely spacious (large living room, separate bedroom, many small art/decor displays, dressing room, toilet room, bathroom, and separate cypress bath area, two gardens). It was a palatial traditional tatami room, very well-maintained, clean, with lovely decor and plenty of amenities. The hotel itself is huge and very beautifully decorated, with a Noh stage. The night of the typhoon, amazingly, there was a traditional Japanese drum show. The breakfast was served in a separate tatami room in the restaurant, and was very extensive. The hotel staff were wonderful. All in all, it is a great place to stay if you are looking for a traditional Japanese experience (which we were!), and was an amazing place to spend the night of the typhoon.
