Traveling with two others, we booked the West Wing for its convenient location. It's a cabin in the woods, and the scenery is absolutely breathtaking. Waking up in the forest, with few people around and fresh air, felt like having the whole beautiful landscape to ourselves – truly amazing! However, the bathroom facilities are quite old, and showering wasn't very convenient. If you're visiting in winter, definitely book a room with air conditioning; just having heating might not be enough, as it could still get cold. For getting around, the hotel offers a shuttle bus with three routes: one to the outlet mall, one that goes back and forth between the cabins and the main hotel building, and another route that I haven't tried yet (haha). If you're unsure about anything, you can always ask the front desk. I would definitely consider staying here again on my next trip to Karuizawa!

We loved it here. It was our second short stay and this time we had a twin room. The room was very spacious, which we appreciate as many rooms in Japan are fairly small. The little onsen is perfect for getting a deep cleanse after travels. The staff is absolutely amazing and the highlight of this hotel

The hotel is brand new. The room is lovely and so spacious! The bed was huge and it was comfortable, we all slept well every night. Staff were courteous and attentive. We really enjoyed our stay here. The hotel location is also perfect, right on old karuizawa ginza street with many food and shopping options nearby during the day. The breakfast options were very limited and the food was the same every day, so I found it a challenge to feed my toddler. Basic food items like cereal and slice bread were not available. The fruit options were also limited and not the most child friendly e.g. pineapple, grapefruit and grapes. Also, the rooms are not made every day but you can request for the staff to clean and make the room. Overall we still had a great stay and hope to visit again soon.

I stayed in a twin room on September 1, 2025. It was very busy with tourists, and the front desk was congested. The food buffet was more about quantity than quality, so I ended up overeating. I could hear the movement of guests on the floor above me and the sound of water leaking from the drain pipes. Water was leaking from the floor of the unit bathroom. The toilet was child-sized, and the hot water was a little hot, but I would definitely stay here again.

As a loyal Dormy Inn guest, it's my top choice for winter trips. I stayed for three nights, and even though I was worried it might be a bit old since it's been open for a while, it wasn't at all – very clean. For about 250 per person, to get a hotel with a hot spring, sauna, ramen, and massage chairs – what more could you ask for?! You don't have to book breakfast; there's a 7-Eleven next door and a Starbucks across the street. When I pushed open the door to the outdoor bath, it was snowing heavily – a beautiful moment added to life!

The baths were amazing! It's fun to visit the outdoor baths in Nozawa Onsen, but if you want to relax in the water, the baths at the inn were great. They were made of wood, had a nice atmosphere, and were kept clean. The food was also amazing. There was a separate dining room, and we enjoyed our meals in a relaxed atmosphere.

The hotel service was excellent. A very experienced gentleman greeted me upon check-in. Although we didn't speak the language, I learned about all the hotel's information and facilities. The free public onsen is open 24 hours, and they even reminded me of the changed breakfast hours. I also managed to book a private onsen room with them. We checked in on a Monday, and the hotel wasn't crowded, so booking a private onsen room was easy. A 45-minute session cost only 1000 yen, which was very friendly to hotel guests. Furthermore, we arrived very late, and the hotel had already turned down the bed, which was fantastic! 👍🏻 I barely had to unpack anything; after changing and soaking in the onsen, I could seamlessly transition to sleep. This was my best night in Japan! 😆😆 (Except for the slight woody smell from the wooden room, which I found a little unusual)

You can see the hotel from the highway before you even exit, and it's super quick to get to. The parking lot is huge and very convenient. There's a supermarket and a drug store nearby. The room was also very spacious with great views of the mountains. I'll definitely choose this hotel again next time I'm in Nagano.

DO NOT GO TO this hotel if you need vegetarian, vegan, or halal food, or have any food allergies or dietary requirements. The hotel says that they do not cater to these (have enclosed their email response).  It’s a really beautiful property and the Onsen is amazing. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. The dinner buffet spread is huge, but there is nothing hot for vegetarians except lukewarm pizza. Even the fried rice, Mapu tofu, and soups included fish or pork or chicken.  When I requested for something hot for dinner, the chef took chilled soba noodles, added hot water and salt, and gave those to me. For the dinner next day, I spoke to the manager in the morning and I was promised veg hot Mapu tofu, miso soup and something else. But when we went for dinner, the only special dish that had been prepared for us was cold soba noodles with hot water, salt, AND mushrooms. When I mentioned that the manager had promised additional items, the serving staff called the manager, and there was a big disagreement between the manager, the chef and the restaurant staff, and the kitchen staff refused to make anything else. The hotel is in the middle of nowhere. Even if you take a taxi to the nearest town (Nagiso), it is Yen 50,000 one way fare to get there and everything closes by 5 pm. So either choose a different hotel or bring your own food with you.

LLanxin001I highly recommend this onsen hotel, ranked among the top 30 in all of Japan, to anyone visiting Matsumoto! The room views, hot springs, food, and service are all impeccable. Having stayed at many Japanese onsen hotels, this one truly offers excellent value for money. Service: The hotel is a 20-minute drive from JR Station and provides a shuttle service. When you arrive at Matsumoto Station, you can leave your luggage at the ACE Hotel, part of the same group, freeing you up to explore. ACE then delivers your luggage to Shoho by 4 PM, which is a very thoughtful arrangement. The front desk service is warm and friendly. A gentleman named Ito helped us book a restaurant in Ise for the next day, making several calls until he finally secured a reservation, for which we are very grateful 🙏. Ambiance: The 56-square-meter mountain-view room is spacious and comfortable, with views of a small town nestled beneath snow-capped mountains right outside the window. The sunrise and sunset are absolutely beautiful. The large public baths on both sides offer unique scenic experiences and are both worth trying, especially the snow mountain view bath, which provides expansive vistas. Facilities: The room is very well-maintained and fully equipped. The hotel also has a souvenir shop, and complimentary drinks are available in the afternoon. Dining: The half-board plan includes a multi-course kaiseki dinner and a buffet breakfast. The variety is extensive, the food is delicious, and it's well worth the price. If you opt not to include meals, there's a ramen restaurant in the hotel, catering to various budgets.

BBryce van de LaarFrom the moment you enter Kokuya Ryokan, be prepared to leave the real world behind and fully immerse yourself in the experience. You swap your shoes for slippers at the door and don’t see them again until you leave. You will receive a warm welcome from polite and gentle-mannered staff, get taken up to your beautiful room, and once you’ve changed into your traditional yukata, it’s time to let the relaxation begin. The multi-course dinner will probably be one of the best meals you’ve had in your life, with many unusual textures and flavors to try. The futons are comfortable, and your room is kept toasty warm. There are even skincare products to keep you pampered and moisturized between soaks in the onsen. Honestly, you won’t even need to open your suitcase while you’re there. The staff will take you through all the logistics when you arrive, but there are some things that might be useful to know in advance. - The ryokan sends a shuttle to Yudanaka station at about 15:00 to collect new arrivals, so time your journey to take advantage of this benefit. - The ryokan also offers guests the opportunity to catch a shuttle to the Snow Monkey Park immediately after breakfast the next morning. - After you leave the ryokan, they will take your luggage down to the coffee shop opposite the station, so you don’t need to worry about those logistics. - Trains from Yudanaka back to Nagano leave at 12:30 and 15:30. - The ryokan itself has several private onsens that you can reserve for a 45-minute slot. Because the onsens are on the property, you can go in with your partner or travel companions regardless of gender. It’s a boutique hotel, so you don’t have to worry about not getting access to all the onsens you want. - The ryokan is on the main road of the Shibu Onsen town. The hotel will give you a key so you can wonder down the main road, visiting any of the public onsens you wish - however, with so many gorgeous and more private onsens in the hotel itself, you probably won’t have time or the desire for this. - Also, there is a coffee machine in the room! (I was worried about having to survive without coffee, and this turned out to be an unfounded concern). We had an incredible and totally indulgent time at Kokuya. Experiencing a traditional ryokan is a privilege that you should try at least once if you can. And adding the Snow Monkeys in give the trip a double purpose, making it that much more memorable. The only thing that would have made the trip better is if we had been allowed to linger longer over every course of our dinner.

QQuingg📍 Hotel Keigetsu 信州昼神温泉郷 日長庵 桂月 @ Hirugami Onsen, Nagano 🇯🇵 We stayed 3D2N from 13 November 2025 at Hotel Keigetsu (日長庵 桂月), and it turned out to be one of the best choices for our Nakasendo trip. The ryokan sits in a peaceful corner of Hirugami Onsen, surrounded by nature and traditional Japanese charm. There is a designated parking area exclusively for guests, accommodating around 15-20 cars of all sizes, making it very convenient for self-drive travellers. We chose a Japanese-style room with a private bathroom, and the highlight was the beautiful wooden bathtub — perfect for a relaxing soak in complete privacy. In the mornings, the view from our room was calm and peaceful, with gentle bird chirping adding to the serene atmosphere. Our stay included breakfast and dinner, and both meals were exceptional. Each dish was beautifully prepared using seasonal ingredients, and the servers were patient and friendly, taking time to explain each course and share stories about local flavours. Their warm hospitality truly enhanced the dining experience. The ryokan is within walking distance to the Morning Market, just about 10 minutes away, making it an enjoyable little morning stroll. There is also a FamilyMart right beside the ryokan, just a short walk away — extremely convenient for drinks, snacks, or last-minute essentials during your stay. The staff also introduced several nearby activities and hiking trails, and the routes are super visitor-friendly, making this ryokan an ideal base for exploring the Nakasendo area. The onsen baths were another highlight — soothing, clean, and filled with Hirugami’s famously smooth, skin-friendly hot spring water. Perfect for unwinding every evening. Overall, Hotel Keigetsu offers excellent food, warm service, relaxing onsen, comfortable rooms, and unbeatable convenience, whether you’re here for onsen relaxation or the Nakasendo trail. Highly recommended for a peaceful, authentic, and memorable ryokan stay in Nagano. ♨️🍁🌿✨

GGuest UserWe spent 2 nights in Prince after first 2 nights in Kusatsu onsen town. The hotel looked underwhelming on arrival and the front office service was efficient but cursory compared to the warm hospitality we had in the ryokan stay. It was low season and hotel was very quiet and had a ”cold” atmosphere. I was further disappointed when we were shown our room which was on the lowest floor with a simple garden view. On requesting the check-in staff for a change of room on higher floor and a more scenic view, I was told there is an upgrade charge, which I accepted. The new room was the same size and configuration but on a higher floor with a nice view of Mt Asama. While I was happy to pay the fee, I can't help but compare their practice with all the hotels that I have stayed in all these years, where room changes were complimentary so long as the room type remains the same. Nevertheless, the hotel's facilities delighted me immensely and I enjoyed the overall experience. The highlight of the hotel stay was the fantastic view of Asama in a high ceiling dining room with full glass window. We were able to have different table seatings for both morning breakfast as the hotel occupancy was low, which gave us different perspectives of the scenery. The other highlight of the hotel is the onsen facility which is located in a separate building on higher ground, accessible via a self service automated tram. Aside from Asama view in the outdoor onsens, there is a common lounge which has equally awesome view of Asama. We enjoyed our time soaking in onsen and resting in the lounge. Was I would go back to Prince Asama and experience the scenery during a different season!

GGuest UserThe reality exceeded my expectations; the hotel was even better than I imagined. The room was very comfortable for a family with a small child! There's a private hot spring for families available by reservation, though the usage time is a bit short, it's still great overall! The food is high-quality, delicious, and varied. It's also possible to extend your stay for 1000 yen per hour, which is super convenient when traveling with a child. The hotel corridors aren't perfectly clean due to age, but the room itself is clean and pleasant.

JJovaI am very satisfied with this hotel, the location is great, the staff is friendly and the room is comfortable. The room was very comfortable in terms of lighting, temperature and bedding. I would especially like to praise the housekeeping sister for keeping the room very clean. The room has two terraces, one of which overlooks the Happo-One Ski Resort. We stayed for six nights and the breakfast food was roughly the same every day, but also rich. We had dinner at different restaurants in the hotel on three nights. On the first night, we had a buffet dinner in the hotel with a wide variety of food. On the second night, we had Western food at The Forest next to the hotel. On the third night, we had Japanese food at The Forest next to the hotel. The prices in all three restaurants were not expensive but the food was delicious. The Dry Room for ski equipment is outside the hotel. It is a real drying room with a machine for drying snowshoes. It is not the so-called Dry Room in some hotels which is actually just a Locker room.

GGuest UserThe English of the lobby staff was mediocre, and the restaurant waiter didn't know much about French wine, even serving French white wine in a sake cup 😅. However, they were genuinely dedicated to serving guests 💕. There's a definite need for more training for the restaurant staff, especially regarding sommelier services.

HHanaLocation is great, it is just on the main road and by the lake. I remember there was a Lawon convenient store not far away when we drove past. We stayed there for 1 night. I highly doubt if we were given the wrong room type, as I booked a room that can see the full Suwa Lake, but the room we have got is at the corner. It is because of the cherry blossom season, there are so many mosquitos outside so we couldn't open any window. According to the information provided by the hotel, the mosquitos don't bite human, but create stains on clothings. Anyway, the room has a private onsen. It was quite small, and look a bit old. The water is very hot, though I couldn't smell any sulfur so it is not a real hot spring. As the windows can't be opened, so it is a quite stuffy inside the bathroom. The room has equipped with all amenities, but no bottled water. The hotel mentioned the water is drinkable from the tab. The room is quite clean and spacious. The mattress is quite nice, it was good for taking a rest after a whole day trip. We chose the meal package (breakfast and dinner). They were both Japanese style with a lot of dishes and options. Food is great. Nagano is not a place that produces meat, so mainly there are a lot of vegetables. With the price we paid for, the hotel services, food and everything is quite reasonable. However, the hotel is a bit old. Nothing is special other than providing a clean room to sleep.
