Diamonds Inn

We had a lovely stay at Diamonds Inn. We booked the Standard Suite, Ensuite 3-bed room which is located at the top floor of the building. A very quaint compact en-suite family room great for a group of friends or family. All basic amenities are there including towels, shampoo and shower gels. There’s also an electric water kettle, coffee/tea, hair dryer and a small fridge! Beds are soft and comfy. Walls are thin and may hear voices of other guests in the halls during the day but was not a major issue during our stay, mostly quiet after 10pm. Location is very convenient as its only a stones throw away from one of the famous wall entrances, a pub and restaurant across and York Minster. Host was lovely and friendly as well, called to ask if we can get an early check-in and was happy to accommodate us.
The Witching Post Inn

Felt like a local. From point of booking to saying goodbye, we were made to feel like valued regular local customers. We decided to eat here as a little break from our hotel - it got good reviews and was dog friendly (that was an understatement). Steeped in history in a quaint Yorkshire village, I felt like I was on the set of a TV show, about to walk into my local for a pint. Staff were attentive and friendly. This place saves the bells and whistles and instead offers excellent value, terrific portions, and outstanding taste. I felt like I had my dinner made by grandma! You can stay the night here and I can only imagine that you will end up in a family Whattsapp group afterwards, because honestly, you are made to feel so welcome. We reluctantly left after dinner, but legitimately could have stayed all night having a few drinks and swapping stories. Gorgeous vibes. Roaring fire. Kind souls.
Emerald Residence

At arrival we managed to get the key before the actual check in time. I called the number and the housekeeper very kindly gave me the key card and showed me how to open doors for later on. We were so lucky to have a family room even if it was just the two of us. We stayed in room 3 at ground floor. There was plenty of space and lots of tea and coffee and a small fridge as well. The bathroom is awesome, brand new with a huge shower and very clean. Only thing is the radiators in the room do not work so there is a heater. The room was quite warm but maybe it would be better to have a different heating system for winter. We like staying in Fulford because it's much quieter than the city centre. The bus stop is very close and busses run every 15 minutes. Perfect for us!
Diamonds Guest House

We stayed here 2 nights and really enjoyed our stay. Very friendly and helpful checkin on arrival. Our room was well equipped with everything you require for a comfortable stay and it was very quiet. Only small complaint was we had an upstairs room and it got quite hot during the day and took awhile to cool off at night. There’s a pub across the road for meals and a drink and a convenience store a short walk away. A short pleasant walk to the city with all the amazing things York has to offer. There’s a no alcohol policy in your room which has attracted some negative feedback in the past. But it’s the owners place so it’s their rules and we had no problem respecting their decision. We had a cup of tea at night instead of our glass of red. The majority of people would drink responsibly in their rooms but there’s always a few that would spoil it for everyone else and the owners have no option but to make it a blanket ban. We would definitely stay again and recommend it to anyone else.
St Marys Guest House

The staffs here are so friendly and the breakfast included is on point. You can have a full English breakfast and everything else on the menu as long as you can finish them all. The location is just fine, about 10 minute walk from the train station and to the city centre. However, in winter, I recommend checking in before 3pm because there is a forest opposite the guesthouse and it would be creepy to walk there when it's dark.
Judges Court

The positives were the lovely building and the staff, especially Ewan who helped me with the coffee machine as there were no instructions. Lovely fresh towels and comfy bed. Great location. The negatives were that it really needs a good clean, sofa and carpet were dirty and it looked like blood on a wall! 4 coat hangers with no drawers to put your stuff in and we were there for 3 nights so ended up hanging my dresses on a fan. No fridge in room and disposable plastic tumblers. Heating is pre set so comes on when they want it too. Had to climb up 4 flights of stairs so not good if you have mobility problems. Wine on arrival did not exist! Have gave it 3* for the history and the building.
The Green Dragon at Hardraw
4.4/510 Reviews
Warm, authentic, brilliantly located. Had a lovely walk round the fall, in the late afternoon, beautiful and quiet. Hardraw Falls (pay to enter as privately owned) was stunningly breathtaking and all paths well maintained. Saw beautiful red squirrels. Checked into the Green Dragon, room 1. Huge, comfortable, warm and clean. Our room had a huge bed and two bunk beds (not needed but handed for family). Towels, hairdryer, iron and ironing board, tea/coffee and large tv. Pub itself served us amazing food and locals provided a lovely atmosphere (chat with Yvonne if you get chance). Rooms were unbelievably interesting and authentic, ranges, log fires, candles aplenty. Breakfast was hearty and tasty and set us up for the day. 100% recommend and will return (maybe with the dogs) again.
The Crescent Guest House

Clifton
Hotels are expensive in York during weekends. The Crescent is an economic one but still not cheap. The location is great and is just 10 minutes walk from the York Minster. The room is very small and the furniture is very worn out yet the cleanliness is okay. The breakfast is good.

Last minute get away. Location, Price, and accept at a charge - good Cleanliness- good Parking charged at 5 pounds a day Room and furniture very tired and shabby. Uncomfortable beds. Stained non black out curtain that look like they have blood stains on them...as per photos. No room blinds so early sunlight. Hallway carpet threadbare, and stale smoke smell downstairs. Just a two night stay but considered leaving after first night. However due to meeting family in York the following lunch time, that we'd not seen in a while we had to stay the extra night. If it would have been for three nights we'd have definitely left after night two. On last day we checked out early to get home. In all not a pleasant place to stay. We won't be returning.
The Old Manse - Pickering
4.6/548 Reviews
My sister and I stayed at the Old Manse for 2 nights last weekend to attend a family celebration in the area. On arrival we were met by Valerie who after showing us our room made us a welcome cup of tea with biscuits We stayed in the garden room which was comfortable, just a pity the weather wasn't good enough to enjoy the lovely garden. We also had bathrobes which was unexpected but appreciated. On the first evening we enjoyed a drink in the lounge with some other guests. Breakfast on both mornings was well cooked and plenty of it. All of the staff we met were very friendly, helpful and cheerful from the waiting staff to David who had the misfortune of having to try to mend the light I had broken. The owner Valerie was lovely and nothing was too much trouble. I would highly recommend this as a place to stay, just a pity we only had two nights.
