"I chose this hotel in Coimbra for its affordability, cleanliness, and convenient location, and I was very satisfied. It's particularly close to the intercity bus terminal. The building appeared to be an older one that had been renovated. Given the price, I would definitely book this hotel again if I were to return."

"Pontos fortes. -local aprazível para descansar e no meio da natureza. -Serviço  irrepreensível, pessoas muito simpáticas. -Pequeno almoço fabuloso. - Boa Relação preço/qualidade no restaurante.  - Quarto: 1-Muito asseado; 2- Bom colchão ; 3- Adorei a casa de banho; 4- Decoração minimalista? mas boa para mim. Ponto fraco: -O quarto podia ser maior; -podia ter um pequeno sofá. Pena que não podia ficar mais tempo.  Normalmente quando estou hospedado num hotel só uso para dormir e aproveitar para passear. Mas este apetece ficar e usufruir os serviços do hotel."

"The spa is quite complete, the pool is really warm, the jacuzzi is excellent, and the sauna is wonderful, and the breakfast is quite good. The hotel is beautiful and comfortable, and the bar also has a lot of drinks, but it could be more varied in relation to snacks, but I emphasise the very good Angus burger."

"Great location, wallking distance to the main tourists street with all restaurants & shops. Across the street from Coimbra train station. (Not Coimbra B) Beds are comfortable & the shower water pressure was amazing, their breakfast was great too, lots of fresh fruits, scrambled eggs, juice & all kinds if breads, pastries, coffee etc. The young ladies at the reception were so kind & caring. The room, bed & bathroom were all spacious."

"The hotel reception was poor, no effort was made to inform us of the hotel’s amenities or location of the amenities. The port wine at the reception was on display but was never offered to us or the other guests. The cleaning staff were very friendly, congratulations. The heating unit was located outside near the window of the room and was surprisingly loud. The worst of all was a male guest using the sauna and steam room while completely *****! Shocking lack of hygiene!!!"

"A superb historic property under private management and ownership - actually, in the ownership of the same family for over 400 years altho’ now a member of the Small Luxury Hotels marketing system affiliated with Hilton. The property in its adjoining Gardens are a destination in themselves, along with the nearby (400m) Santa Clara monastery. They may be sufficient for some visitors, but it’s about a 15 minute walk to the centre of Coimbra and it’s main historical area. Arthur Wellesley - aka Viscount Wellington - was a visitor during his Iberian campaign, so you’re in good company.  Staff are superb and obviously hand picked by the owner. The receptionist when I arrived (Evening of Sunday 16 February) was simply the best I’ve ever experienced, Singapore, Bangkok and Tokyo included.  Genuinely fascinating to talk to about the history of the building and some of the previous guests (famous but  ‘passed’ celebrities so no confidence is breached).  Best to stay in the rooms in the main building if possible, if tales of the previous occupant intrigue. Although the spa Is impressive – up to best Thai standards - and I guess the adjoining spa rooms may be equally good. Overall, an absolute gem that far exceeded expectations."

"Hotel Astoria offers a nostalgic step back into the early 1900s, boasting an unbeatable location with bus stops at the front door and easy walking distance to local shops, restaurants, and the world-famous University of Coimbra. The property captures the elegance of a bygone era through its charming guest lounging area and a unique historic elevator complete with a built-in seat. Guests can enjoy a hearty breakfast and friendly service, and those staying in Room 407 will be treated to a truly fantastic view of the river. However, the vintage charm of Room 407 comes with significant physical drawbacks. The bathroom is exceptionally tight, resulting in several instances of bumping my head on a shelf while using the toilet, and the lack of a vent leads to uncomfortably high humidity. More concerning was a persistent, musty organic smell that the hotel attempted to mask with heavy scented deodorizers, which unfortunately triggered my asthma. Additionally, a safety hazard exists at the room’s entrance where an uneven floor height caused my husband to sprain his ankle. While the hotel is a gem for history lovers, I would not stay in Room 407 again unless these issues are remediated. For those exploring the area's architecture, the hotel is perfectly positioned to visit local landmarks featuring stunning blue tile work, including the nearby Igreja de Santa Cruz, the University’s Capela de São Miguel, the hilltop Igreja de Santo António dos Olivais, and the historic Sé Nova. Go for the location and the staff, but be mindful of the structural quirks of the older rooms."
